Product Description

From Amazon.com

Ani DiFranco was a star from the get-go. It just took the world a little while to catch on to that fact. In 1990, folksingers didn't shave their heads, wear nose-rings, or sing about the feelings in their jeans, but DiFranco did. Her bracing punky stance hit just as hard on her debut as it does now; perhaps even more so, due to its own freshness and DiFranco's uncompromising solo acoustic attack. These songs, all delivered with an absorbing passion and a palpable conviction, are the bedrock of her soaring career. Some, like the fantastic and challenging "Both Hands," still pop up in concert. --Michael Ruby

CD Description

1990. Ani DiFranco s first album is so revolutionary that the purveyors of status quo install women s music sections in the dusty corner of their stores in order to hide it. Dorm rooms coast to coast transform into audio dub houses where young women with aching arms scratch out hand written labels and personal letters like you have to hear this . These quasi-booking agent and pirate distributors work long into the night purchasing greyhound tickets for a certain young Folksinger to come play at their school. Today. Folk and poetry prevail. Vulnerable stories arm themselves as powerful songs on Ani DiFranco s self-titled first solo record. Ani s voice is rich and eloquent. Her guitar moves like an appendage. From cockroach pus to abortion rights the record doesn t flinch. This singer/songwriter Folk Mecca contains songs with an epic stage life such as, Both Hands, Out of Habit, The Slant, and Fire Door . Live versions of these lovely tunes can be located in such divergent locations as Living In Clip and Render: Spanning Time with Ani DiFranco. All of the tracks embody the love and humour inherent in Ani s music. Thematically this record gives a face to feminism that is both beautiful and accessible to anyone. The stories focus on relationships and humanity. We sit in the waiting room of an abortion clinic after facing an angry crowd in Lost Woman Song . Talk to Me Now and The Story confront the inequality of the sexes in a man s world. The love songs examine relationships with the same discernment as the political ones. Both Hands is a hands down favourite among any DiFranco fan. Every Angle infuses the thrill of protest with the joy of a crush, thoughts of you are picketing my brain/ they refuse to work such long hours without rest/ in unstable conditions at best . And the unforgettably poetic and guitarific, Fire Door is a heartfelt treat in its first studio recording.

Why? 17 Aug 2006
Format:Audio CD
I first heard Ani Di Franco whilst sat half way up a mountain working for a few days in a ski field in NZ. Since then most of her CD's sit in the collection at home. Not a Pretty Girl stands out [for me] but across almost all her albums, there are some amazing tracks. I cannot understand why this woman isn't better known across here. Her concerts are sold out but when did you last hear a song of hers on any radio station? Maybe it's because she releases on her own label and thus does not have [or want] the PR engine behind her. If that is the reason, it is a sad indictment on the music indistry of today, and even more so on the radio stations. Buy a CD. It's a slightly acquired taste, but labelling it folk does not do it justice. Do not categorise, listen with open ears and minds.

This album has a very laid-bare style compared to ani's later work and is interesting listening in retrospect. If you have other ani CDs I would recommend getting this, if not then I would suggest other albums first, particuarly "Not a Pretty Girl."

Music for Life 28 Aug 2005
Format:Audio CD
I discovered Ani DiFranco through a friend of mine on a cd she had made for me. I fell instantly in love with 'Letting the Telephone Ring' and immediately bought the album. On first hearing I was a little disappointed to find that most of the tracks are very laid back and didn't have the energy of 'Letting the Telephone Ring'. Since then the album has grown on me greatly. I'm very impressed with her genuine, open and honest style. This is a thought provoking musical journey of one fantastic woman!
It's a great cd to throw on just as you get back in from work, to wind down to after that hellish bus journey home.
Excellent tracks: 1,2 & 13 (still my favourite!)
