Why? 17 Aug 2006
Format:Audio CD
I first heard Ani Di Franco whilst sat half way up a mountain working for a few days in a ski field in NZ. Since then most of her CD's sit in the collection at home. Not a Pretty Girl stands out [for me] but across almost all her albums, there are some amazing tracks. I cannot understand why this woman isn't better known across here. Her concerts are sold out but when did you last hear a song of hers on any radio station? Maybe it's because she releases on her own label and thus does not have [or want] the PR engine behind her. If that is the reason, it is a sad indictment on the music indistry of today, and even more so on the radio stations. Buy a CD. It's a slightly acquired taste, but labelling it folk does not do it justice. Do not categorise, listen with open ears and minds.

This album has a very laid-bare style compared to ani's later work and is interesting listening in retrospect. If you have other ani CDs I would recommend getting this, if not then I would suggest other albums first, particuarly "Not a Pretty Girl."

Music for Life 28 Aug 2005
Format:Audio CD
I discovered Ani DiFranco through a friend of mine on a cd she had made for me. I fell instantly in love with 'Letting the Telephone Ring' and immediately bought the album. On first hearing I was a little disappointed to find that most of the tracks are very laid back and didn't have the energy of 'Letting the Telephone Ring'. Since then the album has grown on me greatly. I'm very impressed with her genuine, open and honest style. This is a thought provoking musical journey of one fantastic woman!
It's a great cd to throw on just as you get back in from work, to wind down to after that hellish bus journey home.
Excellent tracks: 1,2 & 13 (still my favourite!)
