4.0 out of 5 stars Fifties British working class drama, 19 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Filmed in Ipswitch during the post war economy boom, Richard Attenborough is Tom Curtis, a factory worker whose solidarity with his striking co-workers is challenged and ultimately broken by his boss. His decision is met with growing resentment from his colleagues. Very fine performances by Attenborough and Pier Angeli who plays his wife Anna.

Director Guy Green has created a very real drama in which you can readily imagine how life must have been in this British post war town. The dark and gritty atmosphere adds to the realism.
I thought the script was really solid and should have been given an Oscar. A lot of thought went into this gripping drama that will hold your attention all though till the end of the movie. You'll notice Oliver Reed who plays a small part as Mick and Michael Craig as Tom's friend. A movie worth seeing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alone against mob mentality, 2 Aug 2003
By A Customer
This film can really only be appreciated by people who's society has been heavily influenced by union rule. If a viewer comes from a different culture, or who has no knowledge or experience of mob mentality, they would not be able to enjoy this film for what it is - an cinematic portrayal of the type of events that used to occur in working societies dominated by unionism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plato's Euthyphro for 1960, 5 Feb 2007
By John P. Mccormack (Liverpool, Merseyside United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was deeply impressed by the quality of acting - some of the dialogue may have inevitably dated but the performances are first rate.

Actually this film shows a deeply corrupt management AS WELL as union bullying. If you think a Union is automatically right simply by virtue of being a Union you will probably find this film appalling.

If you only want to see "Reds Under the Bed" you will overlook the blatent immorality of the management.

And rather than portraying some absolutely clear-cut hero, The Angry Silence also questions Tom Curtis himself - we can only guess just why he is taking this course of action.

Maybe this film highlights what happens to individual people trapped between competing ideologies with plenty of rhetoric but little humanity

By the way - I have suffered severely in companies with no effective Union presence and I KNOW just how important they are.

I have also endured Union representation which overlooked racist and sectarian bullying and sexual harrassment by fellow employees who happened to be friendly with the shop stewards.

1.0 out of 5 stars My hero, the scab!
This is a very one-sided film with the simplistic message "labour unions bad". From my own point of view, the politics of this film are reprehensible. Read more
