"Angry Candy" is possibly Ellison's strongest collection of stories to date. Virtually every entry in the table of contents is a gem. For myself, highlights include "Paladin Of The Lost Hour" (a beautiful tale of friendship, time lost, and time found), "Laugh Track" (an uproarious parody of the television industry), "With Virgil Oddum At The East Pole" (a meditation on art and redemption) and Eidolons (a series of related koan-like vignettes which will require very thoughtful reading). The whole book resounds with Ellison's characteristic mix of horror and beauty, humor, anger, and wonder, along with a generous dash of spleen. Whether he makes you laugh, or weep, or just pisses you off (or all three!), you will not remain unmoved.

I've always been an avid reader of Mr. Ellison's work and I would have to say this ranks as one of his top 5 book of short stories (as compared to his essays, bu thats another can of worms). From the award winning Twilight Zone episode "Paladin of the Lost Hour", Harlans compassion shines with a light that out wieghs his brass public tone. Follow that with the very funny "Prince Myshkin, and Hold the Relish" a story that just about covers the true pitfalls of time travel. And one must not forget the two true gems of this book, "Eidolons" and "The Avenger of Death". This book is a must read for anyone who thinks that there is no art to writing a short story.

Buy it and cry 28 Sep 1997

Format:Paperback
You can not read this book, close it, and be the same person you were before. This book will change you. A telling of sad and angry tales, from an oh so human perspective, Ellison has written a book so superb that it doesn't deserve to be put in any one genre. Yes, it's angry. Yes, it's candy. It's extreme. I have already lost two copies of this book to friends who won't return it, but I keep on buying it again. Isn't that a good recommendation for a book? You want more? The cover is excellent too - almost worth the price alone, and the authors comments pierces your heart. Now buy it, please. And cry.
