Created in the 1830s by a certain Dr Siegert in Venezuela in the town of Angostura, these bitters are a preparation of gentian originally intended for treating stomach complaints. It was adopted by the British Navy as a medicine for seasickness, but it was soon discovered that it partnered rather well with Plymouth gin. The classic pink gin is made by putting a couple of dashes of the bitters into a glass, swirling it around and shaking out the excess (personally I wouldn't waste any - it is after all 44% alcohol), then adding Plymouth gin, and serving with normal water to top up. Personally I think that tonic works very well. It does indeed add to the complexity of flavours with Plymouth gin. Apart from its use along with gin in particular and cocktails in general, the label suggests a whole load of culinary uses, though I have never personally ventured beyond a partnership with the Plymouth. One annoyance of the bottle is that as you tip it up to shake dashes into a glass, some shoots over the far edge of the glass in the act of tipping. You'd have thought that after 180 years they could perfect the design of the bottle.

I actually accidentally discovered this product on an internet search for stomach problems - severe cramp and bloating - apparently that and other stomach problems is what the bitters were invented for in the 1800's, I decided to give it a go as I am at the end of my tether with many years of bloating and pain, plus it's not chemical like over the counter relief. It's strong! I have a tablespoon full before meals and if and when I feel crampy, windy or bloaty. I must say it works, and quickly!!! So pleased. I also read that it can help reflux which my partner suffers from, and like me doesn't want to keep taking tablets, he can't believe the relief it's brought him. It is definetely worth trying if you have stomach ailments, I think it's a bit suck it and see as to how much and when, experiment a bit. Anyway, we're two happy people! Have bought another 12 bottles (from Tesco's as they had a half price sale on), but if I couldn't find it anywhere else would buy again from this supplier as it was delivered quickly.

Glad to see this old favourite still going, but it's not quite like it used to be. Truly wish if somethings were left well enough alone, despite what the wrapper says.
