Product Description

Product Description

Follow up to the highly acclaimed Angola Soundtrack from 2010. This compilation is a dedication to the short lived recording industry in Angola, a brief moment of history between 1969 and 1978 in which three recording companies produced approximately 800 records, mostly singles. They are rare jewels, each song with a significant story and feel behind it. You will hear exciting music blazed with the anticipation of emancipation, tracks fuelled with a sense of unity, community, importance and immediacy. This addictive, outlawed music from Angola shakes and grooves with the smoothness of staccato machine gun fire. The intimacy of those participating in this musical revolution meant they playfully and professionally wanted to trump each other's style due to the limited recording and performing opportunities. The optimism of Independence can be heard in these recordings; a common goal between the audience and musicians. The characteristically generous liner notes feature 44 pages acquired in coordination with the National Library of Luanda and the art magazine "Note E Dia"and Analog Africa head honcho Samy Ben Redjeb has managed to collect newspaper clips, extremely rare pictures of the bands on stage and printed interviews from the 70s. "Listening to these tracks may cause addiction and provoke heavy rotation!" Samy Ben Redjeb

Analog Africa continue their never ending winning streak with this second compilation of Angolan sounds. As with the first volume, I was quite surprised by how Latin/South American influenced some of this sounds. Then again with the historical and political background taken into account - as always expertly explained in the thorough liner notes - it's often also a matter of who influenced who. In other words, and although some of this music is damn funky, this is pretty far removed from the type of afrobeat/afrofunk that's on offer on some other Analog Africa releases. Comes in the usual gorgeous no-efforts-spared Analog Africa packaging.

2.0 out of 5 stars unexpected disappointment 24 Jan 2014

This music sounds like a conglomeration of the rhythms and themes of neighbouring countries. There is no particular Angolan beat coming through and is humdrum.

Yes hypnotizing & terrific. Different than other Afro-pop as well, with clear propulsive Latin influences. Nice mix of instrumental & vocal.
