Book Description

28 Mar 2005 Heroes History
Following the collapse of the Roman Empire, Britain was settled and dominated by pagan Germanic people. Missionaries arrived to convert many to Christianity. Its people survived numerous Viking invasions and internal fighting and finally a single nation emerged. We discover that the Anglo-Saxon period was not a 'dark' time in our history, but one of amazing achievement. The only English King to be called 'Great' lived in these times. Much of our cultural heritage, laws and our language began here. If that isn't enough, we have in recent years unearthed the most stunning buried treasure! The finds at Sutton Hoo represent the finest craftsmanship in Europe at the time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good content, not such good presentation 10 April 2014

I assumed either this book had decent historical pictures to colour or was colour inside, but unfortunately it is neither. The content is good, although quite gory for younger children. There is a lot of textual information. I bought it for my 6 year old daughter to prepare her for a visit to an Anglo-Saxon village, but it is too old for her at the moment.

I probably chose the wrong style of book for the age of the child. It needed to have more colour to appeal. It assumes that te child already has knowledge of theses times.

A good book to use with 7 and 8 year olds. Lots of simplified information that they can use to find out about the Saxons.
