I bought this item after getting an all-clear 9 week scan. I wasn't sure whether it would work yet as I was so early (was 9+1) and in fact the first couple of days I only picked up my own heart beat! But on the third day, I drank loads of water, waited until my bladder was really full (it was quite painful to press on, and made me feel a little bit nauseous, to be honest) and moved across my belly really slowly... BINGO, there was baby, little heart beating away! :OD

After having four miscarriages (one late), this item has really put my mind at rest. I will only use it every few days (as I don't want to scare myself or baby!) but knowing that I can listen to little bean for the next few months has relieved some of the anxiety I have been feeling. Once baby starts moving, I probably won't use it as much, but I would definitely recommend this product to anyone in the early stages who is anxious. It is great to hear your little one BUT please dont stress if you can't hear it. It took a lot of practice and a lot of patience, and I had to limit myself to only listening once a day, for no more than 15 mins. Otherwise I would have gone mad! The gel you get with the product is good, but I found that baby oil also works very well ;O)

    So, to sum up:
    1) make sure you have a very full bladder if you are earlier than 12 weeks
    2) make sure you have used plenty of oil / gel
    3) dont use it for too long at one time and try to use it no more than a few times a week ;o)
    4) listen to your own heartbeat to compare (yours beats about once a second and is on both sides of your lower stomach area, above your thighs) - and keep the volume at half until you find baby or you will deafen yourself!

I bought this as a bit of a gimmick - I liked the idea of being able to record the heartbeat on the computer (though the recording wasn't as clear as listening with the headphones). You have to have strong words with yourself when you buy these devices - you can't always hear the baby's heartbeat and it doesn't mean there's necessarily a problem, the baby might just be in a position where you can't pick it up. You have to tell yourself that you won't fret in such a scenario, just have another go later and if you have other reasons to be concerned (lack of movement etc) then speak to your midwife. This happened a few times and, sure enough, a few hours later or the next day, I'd hear the wonderful sound of my baby's heartbeat again.

At 27 weeks pregnant, I felt reduced movement. I wasn't too concerned as I thought the baby was growing and had read that it's normal to feel reduced movements. I used the heart detector for some reassurance. However, I didn't hear the normal heartbeat, I heard a strange fast clicking noise. I sought help and my baby was diagnosed supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) - a serious, but treatable condition. She'd already developed fluid around various organs - a sign of heart failure. With a great fetal consultant and medication, she is now a healthy 2 month old baby. Without this device, it would probably have been a very different story. I'm so glad I bought this.

I never usually leave reviews, however I felt this product deserved a thumbs up and to share a little of my experience. This item arrived in just 48 hours despite using the cheaper and longer shipment option (very much appreciated). Being 15 weeks pregnant, i tried using it for 5 minutes over the following 2 days with no luck. I wasn't disappointed or anxious by this as I had read that baby being as small as it is might be hard to find. I followed advice from other posts suggesting the you start by the pelvic bone in the centre and slowly move by a couple of mm after a couple of seconds. Needless to say, withing 3-4 min I could hear the placenta (wooshy heartbeat) then keeping the monitor in the same place, I angled it down towards my pelvic bone n heard the clearer galloping sound of my baby's heartbeat. It helped listening to my own first then tracking baby's. Also a previous post of using bio-oil instead of gel (acting instead of the gel and also helping with the combating stretch marks) works well! Please please do not panic if you cannot locate your baby's heartbeat everytime.... I've used mine 5 times; twice I found nothing, once baby was on the right, then I found it in the centre, and lastly I found it over to my left.... at 5 inches big, it gas plenty of space to hide in.... I've also plugged mine into my beatspill speaker for family/friends listening and recorded this via voice recorder a on my phone.

I was sceptical about this monitor after hearing mixed reviews, but I can honsetly say its the best 20 quid I have ever spent! I bought this montior when I was around 13 weeks pregnant as I have been the biggest worrier! I really couldnt hear anything for the first week after trying it a few times, I thought it was rubbish, and with it looking so cheap like a bit of plastic almost headed for the bin. It got me really worried that the baby didnt have a heartbeat.
I tried again at just over 14 weeks, and I was absolutely amazed! I put the monitor on my own heartbeat at first using johnsons baby oil and listened so I knew the difference. I then put it on my lower abdomen and moved it slowly across. There it was beating away twice as fast as mine, and once u know what to listen out for u cant mistake it!!
Im 18 weeks pregnant now and get an instant heartbeat, and totally reassures me its amazing!
You can hear the baby moving around also, best feeling ever and my partner loves listening to it! I would 100% reccomend this product but advise waiting until you are at least 14 weeks before doing so xxx
