In 1985 Wallace and Mary Brown moved to a council estate in Birmingham, feeling that God had called them there for Wallace to become the vicar of the local church.
The scene facing them was bad. They had a church with few members, most of whom were aging. There was barbed wire all over the place and the "Quinton Mob", the local gang, used to hang out in the grounds. They faced attacks by drug-crazed knife-wielding men, and brick-throwing youths.
Wallace and Mary prayed that God would send down his Angels to guard the walls of the church, and overnight most of the trouble ceased. They went on to develop a ministry, with support from a team gathered in the most unlikely circumstances, which now serves two congregations in the parish, the entire Birmingham outer ring of council estates, and through CPAS, the entire country.
This book is an account of how God made all this possible - how with His help, Wallace and Mary turned the area from a spiritual vacuum to a lighthouse and beacon of hope.
I cannot commend it enough to you. It will encourage you if you're just starting out, will give you ideas if you're in an established church and is a good story to boot! You'll want to read it all in one sitting!
