Henry Mancini really needs no introduction. His music is as much a part of the twentieth century as rock 'n' roll, the Lennon and McCartney partnership, jazz and the great American songbook. This Vocalion release compiles two albums from the later part of Mancini's more than twenty-year association with the RCA Victor label, and both show that he was more than able to 'get with it' in the funky 1970s. This is borne out in Mancini's Angels (1977), which, of course, is a paraphrase of 'Charlie's Angels', the massively popular US TV show that invited viewers into the glamorous world of a trio of beautiful female private detectives. In 1978 Henry Mancini and his orchestra were back in the studio to record The Theme Scene, another exploration of film and television music. 1978 was also the year disco music took the world by storm, and its influence can be felt in various numbers throughout the album, namely Mancini's superb arrangements of the themes from Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Three's Company and Fantasy Island. Format:Audio CD
I've been expected for some time the CD release of these two albums of the great composer and conductor Henry Mancini. Highlights, a beautiful version of "Evergreen", the main theme of the movie "Star is Born" and themes for television that only knew Hank Mancini compose. Henry Mancini in my opinion has always stood for good taste in musical arrangements, but mainly by a jazzy touch in his songs that make them unforgettable. Listen to "The Cheap Detective" and give me reason ... To end the track list, a topic of Mancini little known but very beautiful, "Once Is Not Enough." This is Henry Mancini. A sound will forever be heard!

Mancini's that 70's sound

Henry Mancini, the giant of 60's elegance and cool, was up to the task as the soundtrack of the 70's freely embraced electronic styling. This CD combines his last two recordings from his original RCA contract, which expired in 1978 after twenty years. Those two LPs, MANCINI'S ANGELS(1977) and THE THEME SCENE(1978), are featured here in an attractively priced package. Both showcase his own compositions for the big screen and television (THE INSPECTOR CLOUSEAU THEME, SILVER STREAK, WHAT'S HAPPENING, THE MONEYCHANGERS, NBC NIGHTLY NEWS THEME), and his inimitable arrangements of other movie and tv themes. Highlights include a propulsive cover of the theme from CHARLIE'S ANGELS (#45 pop; #22 adult contemporary, but should have been a bigger hit), his groove driven covers of tv themes for BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, STAR TREK,and FANTASY ISLAND, a beautifully crafted adaptation of themes from the epic mini-series ROOTS, and a haunting vocal treatment of the theme from the film THE CHILDREN OF SANCHEZ. Invariably, the best is saved for last, the title song from ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH, a forgettable 1975 movie melodrama which Mancini graced with a lovely melody, one of his best efforts of the 70's. Highly recommended.
