Product Description

The hard-working nurses of St Angela's Hospital are back, in the second series of Paula Milne's ground-breaking medical drama.

After the huge success of the first series, the student nurses return to face a new set of challenges, both in their working hospital lives and at home. The show continues to tackle the real-life issues that face the medical profession, and is not afraid to deal with the hard-hitting aspects of hospital care or face up to controversial personal issues.

Angels is critically acclaimed for being the first authentic and gritty portrayal of the lives of modern NHS staff, paving the way for later harder-edged medical dramas such as Casualty, Holby City and A&E. It helped launch the careers of numerous British actresses at a time when strong female roles were rare, including Fiona Fullerton, Lesley Dunlop and Julie Dawn Cole.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Welcome Return of Some Favourite Characters 18 Sep 2014

I have just received this new release following a long-awaited pre-order. It is so good to catch up with the nurses from St Angela’s, who are either now qualified nurses, or moved up in their student nurse training.

As a student nurse at the time of first transmission, I watch it all with much nostalgia, and everything still ringing true about student life at that time. It is sad to see the outside shots of St Angela’s, (in reality St James’ Hospital, Ouseley Road, Balham), as it was closed in 1988 when it amalgamated with St George’s Tooting. Just part of the brick wall of the entrance remains, the rest of the site now a housing estate.

The series captures extremely well what it was like to work as a nurse during these years, and brings back such fond memories, both of hard work, but also the fun that was had at the same time. Having watched Series 1 several times over, I am sure I will give this set the same treatment. Highly recommended as a view of hospital life in the 1970’s.

Having enjoyed seeing Series 1 of this 1970s hospital drama come out on DVD, I was pleased when Simply Media announced they'd be bringing out Series 2 as well - but unfortunately when the discs arrived, it was immediately obvious there's been some kind of authoring/encoding error with them. Like most BBC shows of the time, the show was shot in video in a television studio, then when they go outside it's shot on film instead (cf, Monty Python's "This House is Surrounded by Film!" sketch).
As the technical boffins amoungst you may know, video in those days went at 50Hz, whilst they shot the film at 25 frames per second..... looks like someone (or some machine) at Simply has gotten confused, and the video bits have been "filmized" too (i.e. chucked every-other video field away, so they go at 25Hz like the film... the result is horrible jerky motion when anything moves quickly on the picture - almost like some dodgy Match-of-the-Day instant replay.
It's immediately obvious on episode 1... not as bad on eps. 2 and 3, but still noticeable..... I didn't wait any longer before posting this negative review.
This is particularly unfortunate, as Simply Media made the exact same mistake with their "Softly Softly" DVD some months ago, and had to issue replacement discs to everyone.... they don't seem to have learnt much from the experience.
Honestly, you have to wonder what sort of quality control they have there!
(Because of the different way computer monitors work, this kind of problem often isn't noticeable if you want on a laptop etc - but playing the DVD on a DVD player hooked up to a television, it's horrible).
Disappointing. I hope Simply will sort this out swiftly, I'd advise potential buyers to wait until they do.

Gotta love this trip down memory lane..... i should have gone into nursing instead of getting married when i was 18... makes me want to do life all over again but now i'm just getting melancholy.
It's so strange to see people lighting up cigarettes in a hospital though! Gotta love the 1970's!
Cab't wait to see series 3 IF they bring it out... please do!

2.0 out of 5 stars Great drama, but compromised transfer 16 Sep 2014

Last year Simply released the 1969 series of SOFTLY SOFTLY, but with all sixteen episodes in a shocking state because they had been "filmised" - robbing them of their original look.

When this was pointed out to them Simply Issued replacement sets, but these still had a handful of filmised episodes scattered throughout. So a third issue had to be arranged.

Unfortunately it seems that all that effort hasn't taught Simply the lesson that decent quality control from the off would save them an awful lot of bother - the very first episode of the second series of ANGELS exhibits the same problem that the SOFTLY set initially had. A grainy picture, with very odd-looking movement whenever there is any motion for any studio sequence in the episode.

Then second episode is fine, but I've yet to find out if any of the other eleven episodes are just as poorly transferred as the first.
