Amazon.co.uk Review
Michael Connelly, whose novel The Poet won the 1997 Anthony Award for Best Mystery, is already recognised as one of the smartest and most vivid scribes of the hard-boiled police procedural. Now, with his much- anticipated sixth Harry Bosch novel, Angel's Flight, Connelly offers one of the finest pieces of mystery writing to appear in 1998. Bosch is awakened in the middle of the night and, out of rotation, he is assigned to the murder investigation of the high-profile African American attorney Howard Elias. When Bosch arrives at the scene, it seems that almost the entire LAPD is present, including the IAD (the Internal Affairs Division). Elias, who made a career out of suing the police, was sadistically gunned down on the Angels Flight tram just as he was beginning a case that would have struck the core of the department; not surprisingly, L.A.'s men and women in blue become the centre of the investigation. Haunted by the ghost of the L.A. riots, plagued by incessant media attention, and facing turmoil at home, Bosch suddenly finds himself questioning friends and associates while working side by side with some long-time enemies.

Angel's Flight is a detective's nightmare scenario and is disturbingly relevant to the racially tense last decade of the 20th century. Amidst the twists and turns of his complex narrative, Connelly affirms his rightful place among the masters of contemporary mystery fiction. --Patrick O'Kelley, Amazon.com. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description
The sixth Harry Bosch thriller from the acclaimed and bestselling author of THE POET and BLOOD WORK. When the cody of high profile black lawyer Elias Howard is found inside 1 of the cars on Angels Flight, a funicular in downtown LA, there's not a detective in the city who wants to touch the case. For Howard specialises in lawsuits alleging police brutality, racism and corruption and ervey LAPD ccop is a possible suspect in the killing. Detective Harry Bosch is put in charge. Howard's murder occurred on the eve of a major trial: on behalf of a black client, Michael Harris, Howard was to bring a civil case against the LAPD for violent interrogation tactics that had caused his client the partial loss of his hearing. Harris had been acquitted of the rape and murder of a 12 year old girl, but many, including Bosch, believe him guilty. Howard had let it be known that the trial would serve a dual purpose - to target and bring down the guilty cops and to expose the real murderer of the little girl. Post Rodney King, the 1992 riots and the trial of O.J.Simpson, the City of Angels is living on nerves. To discover the truth Harry must dig deep in his own backyard - except that it's a minefield of suspicion and hate that could detonate in his face. And as if he didn't have enough on his mind, his happiness with Eleanor Wish looks to be shortlived. 5 cards on the felt are pulling her back to a place where Harry can not follow, back to herself. With Angels Flight, the matchless Michael Connelly has delivered another hugely accomplished, heartfelt and stunningly authentic thriller. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and true to detail., 4 Mar 2004

This review is from: Angels Flight (Paperback)
I read this book on the flight to the U.S. which initiated my move to that country several years ago. Having spent a couple of months in L.A. in 1991 just prior to the first Rodney King trial (which was to spark the upheaval this book, in part, draws on), at a time when tension was already palpable in the air, "Angels Flight" immediately brought back my memories of that time. Having lived and worked in Los Angeles again for the past three years, I can appreciate even better Michael Connelly's excellent insight into the politics of this city and the situation of the LAPD, where, with the "C.R.A.S.H." scandal, the ghost of the old beast has recently reared its head again. Connelly's rendition is true to detail in every respect - even his description of the ongoing struggle to define the role of the "inspector general," whose position was created as a response to the Rodney King trials and tribulations; who as yet, however, has not been as effective as the creators of that office had in mind.

"Angel's Flight" was Connelly's first book I read, and it immediately drew me into the Harry Bosch series. I have since become an ardent fan and am always eagerly awaiting every new installment. Michael Connelly is one of the few authors who have never once disappointed me!

4.0 out of 5 stars Flight of the Fantastic, 28 Nov 2005
By Sam "samueltyler" (Reading, Berkshire) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Angels Flight (Paperback)
'Angel Flight' tells the next adventure of disgruntled LA cop Harry Bosch. A highly media exposed lawyer has been murdered and the police are the main suspect. The lawyer made his name by suing the LAPD and in doing so made a lot of enemies. Can Bosch and his two partners sort through the politics and lies to see what the truth is. With red herring's and misdirection everywhere it looks like this could be Bosch's hardest case to date.

Connelly has produced yet another great read in 'Angel Flight'. It does not do much to progress the characters but highlights why we like Bosch and his dogged everyman style. The book is fast paced and enjoyable throughout. The darkness may not appeal to some but I felt was necessary for the book to work.

One area in which I felt this book fell down was the wrapping up of the case - I will not go into details but it is becoming increasingly clear that Connelly needs to find a new way of finishing his stories.

Apart from this small gripe 'Angel Flight' is a great read and one for all crime fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Angels Flight, 17 Nov 2004
By A Customer
I have read several Michael Connolly books and enjoy his writing style. Angels Flight was again well done and an enjoyable read. My only disappointment was that there was an incomplete feeling after I finished the book. Other than that I would recommend this book for anyone interested in the crime genre. The characters were fairly well thought out, though again there was an incomplete feeling with some of the characters. There were some good twists and turns to follow which kept me reading fare longer than I should have into the night. Again, all over very good, but a little disappointing towards the end.
