While I am not a massive fan of anthologies, Nalini Singh is good at making interesting and engaging novellas and short stories. All 4 short stories in this book were well written, well paced, and self-contained stories with a good introduction to the Guild Hunter universe, likable characters and great chemistry. This book is pretty entertaining, and would be a good place to start if you are interested in the Guild Hunter series. While I generally think these stories are good, they are by no means masterpieces or must-reads, just a nice anthology for fans of Singh or the series.
Angels' Pawn - Ashwini and Janvier's story is the first in the book, and their story functions as a teaser to the Guild Hunter universe and their future book/novella. The story is really good, Ashwini and Janvier's chemistry and banter is very believable and entertaining, and it is clear that they both have a lot of interesting secrets to be revealed. It is a great introduction to the world.
Angels' Judgement - Sarah and Deacon's story is my least favorite of the bunch. It well written and well-paced, but is completely unengaging and forgettable.
Angels' Wolf - Noel and Nimra's story was a nice, little mystery story with a romantic sub-plot. It had a good story premise and size for a novella, and had some engaging characters. It was nice to see Noel starting to overcome his trauma, and in the end I found the characters and the plot to be engaging, if a bit predictable. The romance definitely takes a backseat to character development in this story, and I think it works out pretty well.
My main problem with this story was Nimra's character, as she came off as incredibly indecisive and spineless. Nimra is portrayed as a strong woman who is kind, loyal and giving, but has to appear harsh, cold and cruel to rule in her domain. She laments having to be so cruel, and obviously hates having to discipline or punish people. Under other circumstances, I might be able to accept that she is forced to do things she doesn't want to in order to maintain her power, but the truth is we are never given a reason for her to be in power in the first place. Nimra doesn't exhibit ANY drive or motivation to rule, and when you combine that with her personal dislike of the things she has to do to maintain her power, you start wondering why she is doing it in the first place? The fact that she is a strong, independent woman who keeps doing something she doesn't want to do OR need to do, makes her come off as being spineless, whiny and unable to take charge of her own life.
Angels' Dance - Jessamy and Galen's story was my personal favorite of the bunch, and might just be my favorite story of the Guild Hunter series, period. Both characters were really likable and both developed a lot over the course of the story. Also, this story takes place over a longer period of time, giving both characters time to come to terms with some of their personal issues and trying to find their place in the world, as individuals and as a couple. It was quite refreshing to have a romance with characters that are instantly attracted to each other, but also acknowledge that they need time to figure out how their relationship will fit into their existence. A surprisingly deep read with lots of great moments, cameos from Raphael, The Seven, etc., and main characters with amazing chemistry.
