BBC Review

Considering Earth 2.0 have existed for longer than the 90s incarnation that altered the face of heavy music it’s odd that Dylan Carlson is still spoken of as if he’s competing with Boris in terms of volume or density. Truth be told, anyone still banging on about Earth in terms of "crushing drone" or heavy metal is rather missing the point, and this latest foray serves as a perfect illustration as it continues down a dusty path that’s less about Sunn amps and smashed guitars than the bleak, stark Americas envisioned by Cormac McCarthy or Daniel Woodrell.

A companion piece to last year’s Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I, it’s unsurprising that this instalment shares many similar characteristics. The line-up, after all, is the same and the tracks were recorded in the same two-week session during which Carlson was battling health problems.

This set, though, relies more on improvisation and the patient, knowing interplay between members so in tune they seem to share a telepathic link. Sigil of Brass sets the scene with typical aplomb, Carlson slowly scratching out a spartan guitar pattern while insectile whirrs, thrums and clicks mutter quietly away in the background. This bleeds subtly into His Teeth Did Brightly Shine, a lengthier number that broods inwardly while suggesting motes of dust illuminated by cold autumn sun and the lonely tick of a worm-burrowed grandfather clock in a dilapidated colonial mansion.

With A Multiplicity of Doors Lori Goldston’s cello becomes the grudging star of the show, creaking and whinnying amid morose bass notes and weary cymbal splashes. It’s only with closer The Rakehell that the pace really changes, its gradual funk representing the album’s riffiest moment and one which, in another, sprightlier, life could have soundtracked a 70s cop show shakedown instead of being better suited to the era’s most lethargic porn flick.

While each pale sketch works beautifully in isolation it’s as a whole that the album truly shines. Though parallels can be drawn with the likes of Labradford, Barn Owl and Dirty Three (or, heretical as it may seem to those echoing Carlson’s appreciation for classic English folk, a more thoughtful and informed version of Brant Bjork’s Jalamanta) it’s better to simply view this opus as a beautifully deconstructed blues that’s equally effective as a paean to careworn Americana or as a sparsely-drawn exercise in restraint, meditation and composure.

Just thought I'd even up the rather unfair above review. This is, basically, the Black Sabbath sound boiled down to its grim, tarry essence: slow, winding bass lines; sun-bleached, drowsy guitar chords and executioner-procession drums.
It's not for those looking for mood-enhancing tunes, but its 'we're-going-to-plough-this-furrow-til-it's-trench' attitude to investigating a groove or a melodic idea is absorbing and to be admired.
ADDL II is the second half of a single recording session, so there's a credit card's difference between the two - though I prefer the artwork for the first one. Buy both, own the set!

Angels of darkness demons of light II
Earth one of the best Drone metal bands out there and with the name that makes you think of black Sabbath one of their inspirations. This album as the title suggests is a continuation of the Angels of darkness demons of light I. The artwork on the album is by the same artist as the previous album.

As with the first it contains only 5 tracks but the album length is 45 munities
Sigil of Brass 3:32
His Teeth Did Brightly Shine 9:00
Multiplicity of Doors 13:04
The Corascene Dog 8:26
The Rakehell 11:51

The music on this album is a little softer in comparison and is slower build than part 1. Anyone who has listened to Earth will know what to expect such as Slow drawn out songs that are often quiet with the odd heavy riffs that are left to ring out.
I think this album really starts to pick up the pace a little from track 3 as the first two are very quiet and softer the drums and bass are not as forward on tracks 1 and 2 but 3 they are more high on the mix and the cello on the music is a nice touch a more haunting sound than without.

To do a little conclusion as I always seem to do I think this album is a little softer and slower than part one so is not as attention grabbing as part one old black just gets you hooked whereas sigil of brass a little too soft and slow to really grab you. This album is very earth from what I have heard of their back catalogue and is a good album to get but I would recommend part one that little bit more as it's a little heavier.

you either slow down, drop out [or something], tune in and meld with this or you will acknowledge someone has actually managed to recreate to perfection waiting for the dentist whilst the receptionist scrapes her nails across a blackboard without using that scraping noise. If you like out-takes from Neil Young's studio, without any words, devoid of song structure, played back at a slow speed this is for you. Personally, I listen to it if I want to do something I hate, like cleaning and dusting.
You have to admire the fact that someone can take some old riffs, play them at Step One learning the chord speeds [oh where do I go next, Oh Up there!] and play them back really slow. I think my computer has been hacked and someone has rewired my 70's takes.
Really, Bill Frisell would be really proud.
