The first three books of the Ripley series, although very good, are really the raw Angel, his personality does not really shine through. This is really the start of the real Angel and brings in some cracking personalities, one of which (Werewolf) is first introduced in Angel hunt, another (Gronhwege) is used again in Family of Angels, but surely, the star of this book, almost eclipsing Angel and only just ahead of the bees is the beautifully crafted character of Lulu Luger. Sadly, Lulu hasn't been used again in future books. Though her sister has.
This is farce of brilliant order. Forget the fact the plot is almost totally unbelievable. You somehow know how everything is going to turn out - but it doesn't matter. Much like candid camera TV, you know the setup, you know the reactions, you know the outcome. Doesn't stop you laughing now does it?
Ripley cannot quite decide, or remember, in future books, how Astral Reich turned out. In some books, they've failed, in others, they are a major international success. Or just maybe, he's winding up his readership.
One thing's for sure though. When you see a honey bee (or two), you will think of this book, guaranteed.
