Product Description

Review

'An astonishing book... completely mesmerising - you can open it almost at random and find writing to make you gasp.' Sue Gaisford, Independent 'The most remarkable thing about Frank McCourt, apart from his survival, is his lack of sorrowfulness. Angela's Ashes sings with irreverent Limerick wit. It makes you smile at the triumph of the storyteller, a tougher specimen who escaped Limerick's teeming alleys through intelligence and cunning and lived to tell the tale.' Penny Perrick, The Times

Product Description

In this memoir, Frank McCourt looks back with sadness and affection at his first 18 years growing up in New York and Ireland. The book combines stories of hunger, poverty and social deprivation with a celebration of the human spirit, laughter and human kindness.

After reading the hard cover edition I listened to the unabriged tape version and it was wonderful. Frank McCourt is an award winning writer and an extraordinary story teller in the best of the oral tradition. His characterizations, dialects, and songs bring the book to life. It is one of the most fulfilling literary experiences I have ever had.

McCourt's book Angela's Ashes is absolutely brilliant. While every page turned does not keep you on the edge of your chair, you do realize the reality of this family's world. One of the best books I have ever read...somehow his detailed narration of his misery could make me both laugh and cry.

The best of Frank McCourts memoirs read in his inimitable style. A book to read when you feel that your life is turning to faeces and that all around you do not understand. It will lift your soul and put a smile in your heart. You cannot get this unabridged audio book in the UK so take the plunge and order from America. It was worth every penny I paid and was the cheapest on the market at just less than twenty five pounds. It is a book that makes you press on with what ever life may throw at you and it is very entertaining and evokes a time and place like no other book I have read. Life affirming and changing. Buy it, you will not be disappointed, I thebarkinglion promise you........Lions never lie.
