Book Description

1 July 2013 Bloomberg (UK) (Book 1)
Angela Merkel was already unique when she became German chancellor: the first female leader of Europe’s biggest economy, the first from former communist East Germany and the first born after World War II. Since 2010, the debt crisis that spread from Greece to the euro region and the world economy has propelled her to center–stage, making Merkel the dominant politician in the struggle to preserve Europe’s economic model and its single currency. Yet the Protestant pastor’s daughter is often viewed as enigmatic and hard–to–predict, a misreading that took hold as she resisted global pressure for grand gestures to counter the crisis. Having turned the fall of the Berlin Wall to her advantage, Merkel is trying to get history on her side again after reaching the fundamental decision to save the euro, the crowning achievement of post–war European unity. Merkel has brought Europe to a crossroads. Germany’s economic might gives her unprecedented power to set the direction for the European Union’s 500 million people. What’s at stake is whether she will persuade them to follow the German lead. Angela Merkel: A Chancellorship Forged in Crisis is the definitive new biography of the world’s most powerful woman. Delving into Merkel’s past, the authors explain the motives behind her drive to remake Europe for the age of globalization, her economic role models and the experiences under communism that color her decisions. For the first time in English, Merkel is fully placed in her European context. Through exclusive interviews with leading policy makers and Merkel confidants, the book reveals the behind–the–scenes drama of the crisis that came to dominate her chancellorship, her prickly relationship with the U.S. and admiration for Eastern Europe. Written by two long–standing Merkel watchers, the book documents how her decisions and vision – both works in progress – are shaping a pivotal moment in European history.

Review

‘…a crisp new account… The Bloomberg correspondents’ book is as much about the course of the eurozone crisis as it is about the German chancellor.′ (Financial Times, June 2013) ′In their book Bloomberg News journalists Alan Crawford and Tony Czuczka track Merkel’s cautious course, often criticized as faltering and hesitant, through the uncharted waters of Europe’s subprime, economic and sovereign debt crisis.′ (Bloomberg, June 2013) ‘The two authors tell the euro story well, but their most interesting material is about her past. Such details, which include her upbringing in communist East Germany, her position as a woman in a man’s world and her background as a research chemist, help to define her domestic politics and her approach to the euro.’ (The Economist, July 2013) ′…an insightful political biography.′ (The Financialist, July 2013) ′For David Cameron, the significant political relationship in Europe is with Germany’s chancellor, Angela Merkel. What makes her tick should be of crucial importance and an insight can be found in Alan Crawford and Tony Czuczka’s Angela Merkel: A Chancellorship Forged in Crisis ′ (Total Politics, August 2013) ‘Czuczka and Crawford raise some pointed, timely questions about her analysis and handling of the euro crisis that have shaped her chancellorship.’ (Irish Times, August 2013) “This book is absolutely fascinating.  If I had my way it would be on the curriculum in secondary schools and third level institutions all over Ireland.” (Irish Independent, September 2013)

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting 19 Dec 2013

Having worked in the past as an economist for the EU Council of the Regions and as a University Lecturer in Political Science and EU Law I try and read as much as I can about the people behind the issues. I usually adore political biographies/autobiographies, which is what I thought this book would be. In reality it is not such a book. This is a more superficial analysis of Merkel from the perspective of the Euro crisis and her response to it. I say it is superficial from the fact that so much of the analysis is based upon Merkel's speeches, rather than more in depth primary source analysis.

This is an interesting account of what, how and why Germany has done what it has done in terms of Euro crisis but it is not an in-depth analysis of Merkel from a personal level and the political analysis lacks depth in certain areas.

This is not a bad book, but it is not what I expected nor wanted, which was a autobiography on Merkel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected 23 Dec 2013
By Sussman TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I must concur with the review done by `Gregory Shanley', yes you get a reasonably well researched book Angela Markel: A Chancellorship Forged In Crisis" that gives the machinations surrounding the financial crisis in Europe and how Angela Markel faced the political and market turmoil that at one stage threatened to cast asunder the 17-nation euro region, she learned fast on her feet, and this then moulded her decision making in relation to that extremely troubling event it was and what testing waters they were as the Chancellor was seen as being cautious, and often criticized as faltering and hesitant, as she navigated Europe's subprime, economic and sovereign debt crisis. This can still be further highlighted by economic woes that still affect EU and non EU partners. You only have to look at the situation in Ukraine and the forces at work there to see that things are not as straightforward as they may seem, whether your lean is towards Ukrainian absorption into Western Europe or if it stays firmly within the sphere of influence of the Russian Federation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Four star book 11 Dec 2013
By Ms. C. R. Stillman-lowe VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
AM has been described as the most powerful woman in the world and the 5th most powerful person. She is headed for a 3rd term as German Chancellor and is said to hold the future of th EU in her hands but is also seen as Merkeliavillian in her approach to politics, and as having to shape them to obtain re-election. This book affords a short biography of this vitally important figure and should be read by all concerned with the ongoing EU crisis.

5.0 out of 5 stars All about 'Mutti' 13 Nov 2013
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Crawford and Czucka's `Angela Merkel: A Chancellorship Forged in Crisis' is not so much an in-depth biography of the German Chancellor but a cogent and well-presented account of the Euro-crisis and Merkel's response to it. Insights into Merkel's early life and personal history are few but telling, while the authors' reliance on Merkel's speeches, on previously published interviews and on the words of others, articulates her publicly asserted political and fiscal philosophies without ever fully revealing what Merkel privately thinks. That said, this excellent and in-depth explanation of Merkel's response to Europe's financial troubles sheds as much light as can currently be shed on Europe's pre-eminent politician, and the authors, while being sympathetic to their subject, allow Merkel's opponents and detractors to state their views.

The key to `Mutti's' success seems to be her calm and pragmatic approach to problems, her strength - and most importantly, her eagerness to listen to those who disagree with her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enlightening 20 Oct 2013

Might I suggest for those that are seeking a biography on Angela Merkel that this is not the book to read. The main focus of this book is the way that the German economy guided Europe into, but not yet out of the current economic crisis.

Angela merely is likely to be illustrated in history as the greatest leader of her generation. A very interesting read about how the central bank and the Budesbank are addressing a crisis.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but not quite what expected 21 April 2014

Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Merkel is an enigmatic character in the UK, due more to the absence of thorough reporting and a degree of personal 'myth' about her early years (is she really the old red who has steered the World's most successful democracy through the biggest crisis of capitalism in history etc..?)

I'd like to have read a book with more personal detail and anecdote, but as a study of recent events, this is certainly worth a look. Read a few sample chapters on Kindle and decide!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a biography in the conventional sense 14 Jan 2014
By G. J. Oxley TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Angela Merkel has remained German Chancellor throughout a very heavy period, and has done well to hold on to her integrity. Crucially for the UK, she also appears to have a liking for 'posh' Dave, our current Prime Minister.

Andrew Marr's very watchable recent documentary described how she was actually born in West Germany, but moved to East Germany with her father and mother and the rest of the family in the fifties, before the wall was built. If that's the kind of personal detail you're after, then you may be a tad disappointed, as the main focus of the book is her more recent political career and the financial problems in the Eurozone.

Still, it's very much worth a read if this is the type of book you're after. And to be fair, the sub-title does more than suggest the approach it takes.
