Product Description

Review

‘Based on a true incident…this beautifully illustrated story needs to be read aloud, preferably with an Irish accent.’ The Bookseller

‘A heart-warming Christmas tale’ The Observer

Praise for ‘Angela’s Ashes’:

'An astonishing book… completely mesmerising – you can open it almost at random and find writing to make you gasp.'
Independent

'The most remarkable thing about Frank McCourt, apart from his survival, is his lack of sorrowfulness. Angela's Ashes sings with irreverent Limerick wit. It makes you smile at the triumph of the storyteller, a tougher specimen who escaped Limerick's teeming alleys through intelligence and cunning and lived to tell the tale.' The Times

Product Description

An evocative Christmas story, from the Pulitzer prize-winning author of the phenomenally best-selling memoir, Angela’s Ashes.

This wonderful Christmas story is based on an incident from the childhood of Frank McCourt’s mother, Angela.

When six-year-old Angela sees the Baby Jesus in the Christmas crib at the church near her house, she feels very sorry for him. He looks happy enough but she wonders why he has no blanket to keep him warm. So Angela decides to take the Baby home with her, when no one is looking, and make him more comfortable.

But hiding the Baby Jesus isn’t easy. How long can Angela keep her big secret?

I got this for my daughter, I thought it would be a bit complicated for her (as she is only two) but it was great. She loved the pictures and the CD that came with it and hasn't stopped reading it. The story is christmas from a childs view. Angela is worried that baby Jesus is cold and so takes him from the crib after everyone has gone. She has to get him home and warm but will someone discover her? Definately a good purchase!

Once more Frank McCourt has delved into his youth - or rather, his mother's - to write a terse, engaging Christmas saga which will remind readers of his Pulitzer Prize-winning "Angela's Ashes". Young Angela Sheehan is six years old, and wonders about the baby Jesus in his crib. This is yet another heart-felt, memorable tale from Frank McCourt that is replete with his crisp, lyrical prose. While I won't predict whether this will be a perennial favorite at Christmas, it should be a most delightful saga enjoyed by everyone this Christmas. The children's edition of "Angela and the Baby Jesus" features excellent art from illustrator Raul Colon; the adult edition features superbly executed illustrations from illustrator Loren Long. Without question, this wee book promises to be a favorite of McCourties (diehard fans of Frank McCourt) and of others interested in the McCourt family saga. Having heard first hand Frank's eloquence as a spellbinding raconteur while I was a prize-winning student of his at New York City's elite science and mathematics-oriented Stuyvesant High School, let me say that his skill is all too evident in this fine little book.

Briefly, a short story about a little Irish girl worrying about the baby Jesus in the church nativity scene getting cold, and taking him home to keep warm, then her mother having to return him to the church.

This is one of those stories which is as good on an adult level as it is for children - I found it by chance in the adults' section of my local library, but then discovered it is in the children's library too.

On the surface it's a simple little story in which Angela knows she is doing something she shouldn't - although for the right reasons - so kids are naturally curious to know the outcome.

For the adult reader, it is strewn with indications of the kind of life Angela has, and the way her six-year-old mind works, and is really very moving. Although it isn't the least bit soppy, I had trouble reading it out loud because of the lump in my throat!
