Amazon.co.uk Review
It’s been some time some French director Luc Besson stepped behind the camera. And truthfully, Angel-A, good as it is, is a little underwhelming, particularly when you see that Besson’s curriculum vitae includes Leon, The Big Blue and The Fifth Element.

Still, that’s not to say that Angel-A is a film without merit. Quite the contrary, in fact, as this simple, diverting tale has plenty in its corner. Andre, played by Jamel Debbouze, is just about to end his life. When we meet him, he’s heavily in debt and he chooses to drown himself in the River Seine. Yet he’s saved by the mysterious Angel-A of the film’s title (played by Rie Rasmussen), and she offers to help Andre pull through his current problems. Thus, the stage is set for a pleasant, engaging mix of comedy, drama and a dose of romance, made all the stronger by its likeable lead actors.

While Angel-A is undoubtedly lacking the ambition of some of Besson’s earlier work, it’s a film that’s hard not like. It’s beautifully shot, tightly put together and thrives on its ultimate simplicity. It won’t be a dish to everyone’s taste, but it’s nonetheless likely to reward the majority who are tempted to give it a spin. --Jon Foster

DVD Description
From the visionary director of the modern cinema classics Nikita, The Big Blue, Subway and Leon comes a compelling romantic fable set in Paris, the world¹s most beautiful city.

Angel-A begins when two strangers meet on a bridge one morning. Looking to escape his past Andre (Jamel Debbouze) accepts the help of the mysterious Angela (Rie Rasmussen) and sets in motion a chain of events that will change his life forever. Beautiful in its simplicity, Angel-A is a striking, supernatural love-story and the first film Besson has directed for over seven years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb modern day fairy-tale, 25 Feb 2007
By L. Davidson (Belfast, N.Ireland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I have no hesitation in giving top marks to this stylish French film. It is filmed beautifully in monochrome, the acting performances from Rie Rasmussen and Jamel Debbouuze are impeccable ,the musical soundtrack is enchanting and the storyline is captivating.Debbouze plays a businessman,Andre, up to his ears in debt to a number of dangerous criminals, while the svelte, stunning Rasmussen plays a mysterious stranger whose name,Angela, provides a clue to her real identity.Their paths cross on a bridge and the pair gradually build up a close relationship as Angela assists Andre with his debt problems and helps him feel better about himself and life in general. The on screen chemistry between the unlikely pair is very strong and the film touches on a number of key themes such as the transforming power of love, the unnoticed influence of the supernatural and the importance of a sense of amour propre. Quirky and idiosyncratic, romantic and witty, "Angel-A" is one of the best films that I have seen this year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome back Monsieur Besson., 8 Jan 2007
By Charles Wolf "Lupaster" (Italia) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
The last time Luc Besson directed a movie was back in 1999, now he's back on the director's chair, and the result is a great achievement indeed.

The cast is part of the magic, Jamel Debbouze (you might know him as the slightly retarded grocer's assistant in "Amelie") is particularly good as the nervous André. The Dannish Rie Rasmussen, a sexy blond goddess with legs that go all the way to the sky, takes a little more time to convince as Angela. However, there is a certain chemistry between the two of them. The other characters are merely caricatured portraits of criminals and gangsters.

As soon as the movie begins, we're presented with beautiful scenes from Paris, all in an appropriate and superb black and white, which is still one of the bests I've ever seen in a movie.

Along the movie you'll unconscionably perform some introspections at the very same time the main actor does them, so in the end you'll come out of the movie feeling very good (or not?) about yourself.

So, in a brief summary, you'll have access to stunning visuals with wonderful filming perspectives (the french don't play with that), a sense of humor which is to die for, a superb story with virtually no plot flaws, and an unpaid visit to the shrink.

It is without a doubt a wonderful movie. A must see.

5.0 out of 5 stars unexpected delight, 9 May 2007
I bought this dvd with very little knowledge of the film itself, being attracted by the Director (whose previous films I've enjoyed) and the rather striking box art. Boy, am I glad I took the plunge (no pun intended!). The story itself is very simple but this allows us to concentrate on the, almost palpable ,growth of love and respect between the two main characters leading to one of the most moving pieces of understated acting I've ever seen in the 'mirror scene'. This is a romantic film that even 'blokes' will love!!
