Book Description

Who can she turn to when life gets tough?
April 1941, Hull. Nurse Marie Larsen has grown used to the challenges of keeping Hull Royal Infirmary running during the Germans' attacks on her city. Amidst the sudden power cuts, blown out windows and with wounded civilians pouring into the hospital at each new attack, she always thanks her lucky stars that the latest bomb didn't have her name on it.
But when a fresh wave of bombings tears Hull apart, this time tragedy strikes close to home. With her mother now critically ill in hospital, and her father missing, Marie will have some tough decisions to make if she is to keep her younger brother and sister, Alfie and Pam, safe.
Amidst the chaos and uncertainty, it is Marie's beau, Chas Elsworth, who alone is able to keep her spirits up via letters and phonecalls from his post. So when evidence comes to light that Chas might not be the dependable rock that Marie has come to rely upon - where can Marie turn for support?
A gripping tale of ordinary people facing extraordinary challenges, Angel of the North, is perfect for fans of Katie Flynn and Margaret Dickinson.

A well written book, with excellent references to "a North East Coast Towns" wartime history. Couldn't put it down, started it at 11am and finished it by 8pm!! Now looking for the others by the same author!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wartime heroism 10 Dec. 2013
By Muppet
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A good story with lots of factual information, with the right result for the heroine, but at time some of the story lines were a bit depressing, even though it was a bad time in the history of the UK. Taken overall a good read

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read 10 Jan. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I really enjoyed this book - particularly the references to the devastation caused by the bombing of Hull. I didn't realise that Hull had suffered so much. A great piece of fiction with lots of interesting historical detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Angel of the North 29 Jun. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Yes loved this couldn't put it down till I finished it.
Very good story. Lot gone into it. Glad things went well
For Marie and Charles in the end. She did want him more
Than George or Terry. They seemed dull to her but Chas
As she called him. Had more of what she wanted..
He wasn't dull. Very much the opposite. Silly Nancy could
Have had George but she ruined it. By running off with
A con man instead of an Actor. Or he wasn't just that .
But she got what she deserved after taking her money
And George's to no wonder he was annoyed with her and
Leaving. With out a goodbye. And Marie and George thinking she could have been killed in the Air Raids.
But they didn't know she had run off with her mother's
Lodger. Still Nancy got what was coming. But Glad
Things went well for Marie in the end. With Marrying
Charles..it had a lot packed into this. And Pam her sister
Maybe one day will return home after the war .
I give this five stars cause it deserves it. Good story
Lots of Laughter and tears poured in .And never knew
Quite how it would end. Who Marie would choose in the
End. But luckily she chose Chas who she loved the best.
Well worth the read. Didn't want to put in to much.
Of this review or would spoil the reading of this book.
Do read it. Enjoyed this very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book! 12 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the first book I have read of the author Annie Wilkinson and I will be looking out for more of her books. It's a lovely well written story and the people in the book come to life as you read them. Set in Hull against the backdrop of WW2 I would recommend this book as it is a good story and ideal to read after a busy day.

Angel of the North, An interesting story of Hull Yorkshire during the second world war, & how the people copied with their City being boomed Night after night. The family in the centre of the story are Mr & Mrs Larsen, with Daughter Marie, Pamela (Pam) & son Alfie, all quite different children. Marie is the main character, that leads the story, she is a nurse at the Hull Infirmary hospital. & we meet her friends & their ups & downs during this period of the War.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well recommended. 10 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this book for the simple fact that I too am , and are proud to be from Hull. I found the book very interesting and as it was set in the area I grew up in I could visualise clearly the characters walking the streets. Im not sure if a couple of events in the book are fact ( for instance , the Ellis Street shelter bomb ) as I can find nothing about them , but it was still an enjoyable book to read and also an original storyline. Well recommended.
