Product Description

Album Description

Activist in Seattle Women in Rhythm & Blues; a member of the Northwest Hall Of Fame (which puts her on a par with the mighty Kingsmen and Sonics!); maker of one of THE classic hit singles - a radio staple ever since, and a front runner in the Memphis pop explosion which led to famous Soul factory American Studios producing The Box Tops, a whole slew of singles for Eternity's Children, 'Dusty In Memphis" and this classic collection of popsoulfolkrock recordings on Bell Records (check out the songwriter credits on the right!).

A legend and huge live draw in their native Northwest, Merrilee and her band The Turnabouts were on tour in 1967 with their local superstar friends Paul Revere and The Raiders, who like ELVIS and DUSTY SPRINGFIELD had been intrigued by the Soul and Pop masterpieces emanating from American Studios and decided to make an album there with the crack team of writers / producers / musicians. They recommended Merrilee to the legendary studio boss, Chips Moman, who asked her to record a version of ‘Angel Of The Morning’, the Chip Taylor future classic. When released as a single, it became a monster hit and there followed a whole load of great material on BELL records, with that classic American Studios sound to the fore, and Merrilee's voice - owing as much to Evie Sands and Jackie De Shannon as it did to her own unique take on the songs -was the icing on the cake…as Folkrock met Soulpop!

At last, here are the complete BELL recordings, including the rare Quincy Jones produced take on ‘What the World Needs Now’ and Merrilee's amazing trippy version of the Motown classic ‘Reach Out...I'll Be There’; apparently inspired by hearing Vanilla Fudge's overhaul of ‘You Keep Me Hanging On’, on the car radio one rainy night on tour - an amazing slice of Memphis pop Soul with a twist!!

Beautifully remastered and sumptuously packaged with lots of gorgeous pictures and full-on notes – this is a must for any fan of top quality girl vocal pop/soul…

5.0 out of 5 stars This Angel Soars, 15 Jun 2006

(REAL NAME)
This pop classic from 1968 finally gets the reissue treatment on CD! Every track on this album is a gem. Merrilee had both an innocence and a toughness in her vocal interpretation of these songs. True, she played the victim on tracks like That Kind Of Woman, Working Girl (sexual harrassment in the work place), Billy Sunshine, Handy, It's Worth It All and of course the million selling Angel Of The Morning but hey, it was the late sixties. This album was recorded at the famed American Recording Studio in Memphis and was produced by the legendary Chips Moman and the late Tommy Cogbill. The album features songs written by the likes of Mark James (who wrote Willie Nelson's Always On My Mind, Hooked On A Feeling for BJ Thomas and Suspicious Minds for Elvis), Chips Moman, Joe South (Hush), Donna Weiss (who co-wrote Bette Davis Eyes for Kim Carnes), Mark Lindsay and Chip Taylor (who wrote Merrilee's Angel Of The Morning and Wild Thing for the Troggs). There is also a very sweet version of the John Phillips' flower power anthem from the summer of love, San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair). Angel Of The Morning was featured in the hit films Jerry Maguire and Girl Interrupted as well as the cult classic Fingers starring Harvey Keitel. The songs on this CD are pure sunshine with a little country-pop flavor from the fabulous 1960's. Merrilee recorded and released several non-LP singles and B-sides after the release of this album including a very cool psychedelic version of The Four Tops' Reach Out (think Vanilla Fudge), as well as a cover of Jackie DeShannon's What The World Needs Now from the soundtrack album to the film Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice produced by Quincy Jones. All of her Bell recordings are included here. If you are a fan of the Memphis sound and albums recorded there by Dusty Springfield, The Box Tops, Petula Clark, Elvis, BJ Thomas, The Raiders and others then you will enjoy this CD. Much has been written about these recordings not being available in true stereo mixes. The fact is they did not do any. These recordings, especially the singles were deliberately mixed in mono for AM radio in the sixties. The album tracks channeled to immitate stereo. What you get here are remastered versions of the tracks the way the great Chips Moman inteded them to be nearly 40 years ago only sounding fresher and clearer than they did back then.
Collector's Choice in America was the first to reissue this album with all 9 bonus tracks. The Rev-Ola version is essentially the same sound wise. However, the Rev-Ola packaging is far superior to the Collectors Choice edition. Rev-Ola has included a deluxe CD booklet loaded with vintage photos of Merrilee as well as memoribilia and very nice liner notes. If I had to recommend one over the other, I would say pick up the Rev-Ola version. It is a much nicer package over all.
