First Sentence
Now and then the western clouds after sunset assume a shape resembling that of a vast extended wing, as of a gigantic bird in full flight-the extreme tip nearly reaching the zenith, the body of the bird just below the horizon. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars Academic Examination of the Myth/Mystery, 11 Jan 2005
By A Customer
An excellent book examining the 'Angel of Mons'. The account is well researched and fully referenced. The evidence is fully traced and examined within the context and themes of the time. While books with similar titles may have an agenda, the author is only interested in a fair and thorough examination of the evidence.

5.0 out of 5 stars 90 year old mystery solved!, 15 Dec 2007
By Ruth Gill (South Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews
This fascinating book reviews the evidence for the famous ghostly sightings of angels, St. George, Joan of Arc and the Virgin Mary during the Great War. The author marshals a large and complex body of evidence to produce an accessible account. His open-minded approach is refreshing, and he wears his research lightly, although there must have been an awful lot of it! He is a university lecturer in journalism, which explains the slight bias in favour of 'Fleet Street's Finest'! But if you didn't know that, you probably wouldn't have spotted any bias.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, 20 Nov 2004
By G. Games (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The definative account of the mystery. It is difficult to see how this could be improved. Clarke examines the evidence in detail and provides a fascinating account of the development of a modern myth, created by one of the worlds best writers Arthur Machen. Anyone intrest in the Great war and urban legends should read this.
