This was an impeccable little thriller set in modern France. The calm rationality of impeccable good manners in the banality of everyday life. Two mothers with their children. One about to move with her husband, boy and daughter to Canada with his job,her house up for sale. They live in a marvellous big house with a swimming pool. The other mother very self possessed, works as a pharmacy clerk and is divorced, fighting for her son in a bitter custody battle while holding down a difficult job.Her son goes to a fancy-dress party and she collects him.She sees a young girl whom she becomes fixated on,believing her to be the daughter she lostin a hospital fire over 6 years ago.We find out from her divorced husband who brings her son back, that she has some record of emotional instability. She believes her daughter is still alive and through her son finds a way into Claire's(Bonnaire's) family home and routines as he plays with Claire's son or Elsa(Frot) pretends to want to buy Claire's house. She gets closer to Lola(the girl),seeming to stalk her and her family, once in a dream(as in Hitchcock we think it's real),then once in reality as she watches Lola dance from the side of a stage. In all this our sympathy lies with Bonnaire and we become paranoid, tense and edgy whenever Elsa is near, fearing violence or kidnap. Her parents are increasingly worried, her ex-husband thinks he has a good case to get custody of his son.Her behaviour turns increasingly disturbing, how far will she go?This is based on a true story and as in the Wrong Man,truth can be stranger than fiction. As Claire becomes increasingly paranoid and suspicious,we begin to wonder...prepare for the shock ending. Two fine actresses at the top of their game.
