Small town fear and loathing
on 6 August 2014
Darcy is released from prison having served 10 years for setting a fire that killed her parents. It is a broken woman that returns to her relatives who run a motel in a small town. Gradually she faces the community that she fears will reject her, finds friends and old enemies. She is also fighting with her terrible secret, that she herself spontaneously caused the fire and it is a power she can barely control.
The story is well written for a freebie, although the cast of characters tends towards the stereotypical; The gruff uncle, the mumsy Aunt, the bullying police chief, the psychotic ex, the handsome, sympathetic love interest are all present and correct. However, despite the familiar set pieces, the story doesn't quite play out as you might expect.
Worth a look if you enjoy a bit of the supernatural in your fiction.
