Product Description

Michael Foot's two-volume biography of Aneurin 'Nye' Bevan (1897-1960) - arguably Britain's greatest socialist, indelibly associated with the founding of the National Health Service - is one of the major political biographies of the last century. It is the life of an inspirational politician, written by one who knew and unabashedly admired him.

Volume II, first published in 1973, begins with Bevan's role in the founding of a comprehensive National Health Service - this while he was also tasked with addressing the country's severe post-war housing shortage. It takes in his 1951 resignation from the cabinet in protest at the introduction of prescription charges, and his subsequent leadership of a 'Bevanite' Labour left; his publication in 1952 of In Place of Fear; his service as Shadow Foreign Secretary during the Suez crisis in 1956; his controversial reversal of opposition to nuclear weapons in 1957; and his death from cancer in 1960.

About the Author

Michael Foot (1913-2010) was a writer, journalist and politician, leading the Labour Party from 1980 to 1983. His numerous books range from the withering polemic Guilty Men (co-written with Peter Howard and Frank Owen) about the hapless appeasers of the 1930s to his magnificent two-volume biography of Aneurin Bevan.

3.0 out of 5 stars One of 2 19 April 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Lost this book in one of my moves and, in view of the catastrophy of the last election, wanted to cheer myself up by re reading this standard text about the star of all Socialists. Michael Foot's style now seems way too erudite and rather dry. However, it did remind me of some of the wonderful things Aneurin said during his lifetime and also of the massive contribution he made to the welfare state in this country which current Camereggs are currently demolishing. Given the pigs ear they are making with all the modern technology at their disposal and all the people that now work in central government, how astonishing that one man with a loud voice, good heart and pen and paper could make such massive differences to the quality of life of so many people on so many different fronts. Well worth buying again
