The Gododdin is a medieval Scottish epic poem, probably their oldest & may even be based on a 6th century original, allegedly written by Aneirin. The version we have is preserved in the 13th cent. Book Of Aneirin, one of the "four ancient books of Wales". Also included in the Book Of Aneirin are the 4 "Gorchans" or eulogizes dedicated to the men who died in the battle of the Gododdin (not included in the Short translation). The poem tells the story of king Mynyddawg Mwynfawr & his 300 troops who celebrated for a year before marching out to recapture the town of Catraeth from the Anglo-Saxons. They encounter no less than 54,000 enemy troops & only the poet Aneirin survives to tell the tale. The motif of the single man who lives to record the tale is common to Celtic myth.
Here are some of the earliest Celtic poems to make the transition from oral to written history. Here you'll also find references to Myrddin (Merlin) & Arthur & if these are not late corruptions of the original text, then they are surely the oldest references we have to either of these legendary figures. Even in translation the poem contains all the thrill & power of a 6th cent. battle & a good deal of the poetic elegance found in the Cumbrian original.
