More About the Author

It is only now, in the last few years that Sonia Demetriou's love of the arts and crafts and food combined with her desire to connect with her roots in Cyprus, prompted her to set out on a journey to discover what Cyprus had to offer resulting in the writing of Androula's Kitchen-Cyprus on a Plate.

Sonia was born in London in 1948 to a Cypriot father and English mother. She trained as a restorer of antique painted furniture in a studio in Chelsea in the mid 1960's indulging her passions for art and history both at the same time. She learned all the traditional paint techniques and how to apply them. Over the years, especially after moving to set up her own workshop in Sussex in the mid '70's she applied them not just to furniture but to floors, walls and eventually harpsichord cases.

Product Description

Androula's Kitchen- Cyprus on a Plate is not just a cookery book it's a meze of Cypriot culture. A rich selection of photographs give a flavour of the beautiful landscape of Cyprus as well as a taste of the traditional and contemporary arts & crafts on the island. Descriptions of Cypriot culture in a bygone age together with delicious recipes gathered from friends and family to tempt your taste buds. Weaving, pottery, basket weaving, lace making and art are all given a chapter. Both traditional and contemporary craftspeople were visited on research trips to gather photos and information. The inspiration for the book came after a visit to a traditional stone built house in the Troodos mountains full of traditional arts and crafts.
