Highly Recommended 1 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
This is easily the best book I have read on Android development. What sets "Android in Practice" apart is its focus on practical techniques that solve common problems faced by developers in real world Android projects.

This book provides coverage on many important topics that barely get a mention in other texts or within the official Google documentation, such as managing configuration changes with AsyncTask, handling http network failures and retries, creating database access layers for SQLite and using the styles & themes framework.

The authors have done a great job in balancing the material such that it provides a first time Android developer with a good introduction to the platform fundamentals as well as shedding light on some deeper concepts that will benefit even the most experienced of developers.

Highly recommended.

This is an amazing book in that it has yet to fail me when I've searched for how to do things on Android. All every question is answered with the most succinct code example available so you can use it and then perhaps investigate all options further.

I use it more as a reference to getting things done, that reading it from start to end. This popular book pattern of "recipes" is good, even though some times it is taken too far where it just get ridiculous to begin every topic with a "problem"/"question". This book, however, is on the right side of that fence.

I'd say it is more for the advanced Android developer than the beginner. This was just what I was looking for.

Advanced Android Programming 15 Nov 2011
By Lars Vogel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
In this book you will notice that the authors understood the platform really well and they have an excellent way of sharing this with the reader.

The one thing I really like about this book is that it makes no compromisses in the quality of the examples. While other Android introductions typically avoid using advanced concepts, as asynchronous reading of web resources, for their introduction examples, this book uses the all the right concepts directly from the beginning. This might make this book a little bit heavy for Android starters but once you are over the initial learning experience you should get this one.

You also find lots of examples for typical implementation requirements, which are hard to find otherwise.

A must buy for any serious Android developer.

What books should be. 5 Oct 2011
By Robert Cooper - Published on Amazon.com

"Android in Practice" is everything an experienced developer needs to develop first class applications for the Android platform. While not an omnibus tour, it includes everything a developer needs, including the OS tasking and networking models, UI, and storage.

Perhaps just as importantly, for honest-to-FSM professional developers it includes good coverage of setting up a build and test environment that will work with your pre-existing CI process.

"Hello, Android" is great if you don't know what you are doing. If you are a professional software developer, this is the book for you.

A lot of great material, well organized. Well worth the money. In a field otherwise crowded with sub-par Android books, this stands out as a reference/tutorial which is a real help to developers.
