5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended 1 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
This is easily the best book I have read on Android development. What sets "Android in Practice" apart is its focus on practical techniques that solve common problems faced by developers in real world Android projects.

This book provides coverage on many important topics that barely get a mention in other texts or within the official Google documentation, such as managing configuration changes with AsyncTask, handling http network failures and retries, creating database access layers for SQLite and using the styles & themes framework.

The authors have done a great job in balancing the material such that it provides a first time Android developer with a good introduction to the platform fundamentals as well as shedding light on some deeper concepts that will benefit even the most experienced of developers.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book to get things done on Android 8 Feb 2012
By Mike P
Format:Paperback
This is an amazing book in that it has yet to fail me when I've searched for how to do things on Android. All every question is answered with the most succinct code example available so you can use it and then perhaps investigate all options further.

I use it more as a reference to getting things done, that reading it from start to end. This popular book pattern of "recipes" is good, even though some times it is taken too far where it just get ridiculous to begin every topic with a "problem"/"question". This book, however, is on the right side of that fence.

I'd say it is more for the advanced Android developer than the beginner. This was just what I was looking for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful in Practice 7 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback
This book has helped me a lot in day to day Android development. I particularly liked the chapters about HTTP networking and the chapter about using DAOs for database access(Technique 35), wich helped me a lot when storing data of a complex domain and integrating with a webservice. The chapter on testing was also very helpful. Any serious Android developer should own a copy of this book.
