Well built product. Buyers should be aware that the whole casing gets very hot in use, not just the hotplate itself. When you run it at full heat for 10 mins to burn off the protective coating, I recommend to put it in the garden on an extension lead as it can be smelly. If you do it indoors remember to turnoff the smoke alarms and turn them back on later.

Well made, works effectively and good value for money. However, the whole of the white casing around the actual hotplate also becomes very hot and stays that way for sometime after switching off. It therefore needs to be used with real care, in terms of only standing it on a totally heat-proof surface and being very careful that neither the user or anyone around accidentally touches the casing.

This is a solid piece of engineering and works well. Steel casing and just one knob to control the heat setting. We use ours in the office kitchen and it boils a pan of water just as quickly as a full-size hob on a cooker. The heating element does stay hot for a long time after the unit has been switched off but then you get what you pay for (an induction hob would be £70 to £100 but we are happy with this basic model for less than £20).

We needed a standby hotplate for when the AGA gets switched off during the summer. This heats up fast and evenly, and just does the job. Slow to cool down, but that's true of all electric hotplates and you get used to it - switch it off well before you want to finish cooking and it ain't too inefficient. Looks OK too. Great value.

Excellent product. Quick to warm up and very controlable. Ideal for any application requiring a heat source when the wife objects to you taking over the kitchen. I use mine for melting wax for candle making, and for boiling up animal glue for antique furnitre restoration.

I purchased in August 2011 and it died the second time I used it. They replaced it for me(under the warranty)which was fair enough, but it died gain in September 2012(warranty expired...) and I've only used it around 7 times; no wonder they've dropped the price...! I contacted them again and the say they would fix it free of charge, but I would have to pay for postage there and back which works out to around £9, but the hob cost £14 so not worth it. There is an internal thermal fuse that's blown; I've ordered from EBay and will fix myself [...]cost £3.75 for 5 fuses.

I looked at quite a few single hobs and finally settled on the Andrew James Electric Single Hob and I must say I was not disappointed. It is compact and heats up extremely quickly. It did precisely the job I brought it for.

I bought this Hob and it lasted two weeks before it broke down. Was really useless anyway as high heat would switch off when it got to its temp. and so it took ages to cook anything on.
Didn't even send it back for a refund as it was to much hassle to post it and didn't want another one. DO NOT BUY.
