5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for small flat 25 July 2011
My cooker gave up the ghost recently so I bought the Andrew James Double Hob which has enabled me to boil eggs, vegetables, rice etc. again. I already have a table-top grill/oven so am now more or less self-sufficient. Don't think I'll bother with another cooker!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Hob 10 July 2011
By Carra D
This hob is excellent. It is easy to use, fast and compact. I use this as my main hob as I don't have one in my flat and live alone and so this is perfect.

This little hob was bought while alterations were being made. At first it seemed O.K. and dropped to poor after finding out it's a total nightmare to keep clean.
Even simple things being cooked using the solid metal plates get stained and try as you may keeping it clean is next to impossible. Everything and I really mean everything stains this hob although there may well be a cleaning substance out there which should be researched and sold along with it.
The heating element on one ring(the smaller ring) is very slow while the other one is good.
Value wise? it's o.k.
Would I buy it again? no! because everything cooked on it stains it, and one of the rings heats in it's own time - the hob is still quite new and no matter how conscientious you are about keeping it clean the hob will always stain and look older than it really is. This is such a pity as the hob when new looks very smart. The hob has now turned into an embarrassment and gets hidden away as it looks unclean which is the opposite, and now looks very scruffy.
I would liked to have stated that both plates heat up quickly and similar, and the hob was as good as new - no way!
If and when I go for a convenient hob again it will be two single hobs rather than a twin one.
Reading some of the other comments it reads as if I am looking at a different product - for example one person says it's easy to clean - I'd really like to know what their cleaning substance is? Another says the heating elements are quick - perhaps my one is faulty?, either way I would really like to know what they use when cleaning this hob - and i bet the manufacturers would like to know as well!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Andrew James electric double hob. 1 Sep 2011

I am really pleased with this little unit.

It tidied us over while a new kitchen was being installed and I have come to rely on it heavily.
To the point where I prefer to cook on this hob than on the new, fairly exotic, gas one.

It does take a little while to bring a large, full, pan to the boil but one can control simmering very precisely - especially when using cast-iron pans.

Easy to clean and the rings retain heat for long enough to prevent over-rapid cooling while plating out - or for allowing things like rice, or spaghetti, to "mature" after switching the current off.

One reviewer commented that the rubber feet come off easily.
I have not experienced this, but can imagine it happening if the unit, with two heavy pans on top, is pushed over a non-slippery surface.

The graduations on the knobs are almost invisible (they are there, black-on-black, if you look carefully !) but I have not found this to be much of a problem in practice.
One soon gets used to the thermostatic controls - which work well.

I recommend this little hob and would be surprised if one can get a better unit for the money.
I have no intention of getting rid of mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Andrew James Double Hob 6 Sep 2011
The hob gets a lot of use. It is a good size, light, easy to clean and move around. The design is simple and what you see is what you get. Excellent value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Electric double hob by Andrew James 18 Oct 2011
It is a very good item, unlike the others, it doesn't keep turning off when it reaches certain temperature and therefore it is possible to cook a meal as in a normal cooker. boiled cool water in 6 min, great, I am very pleased.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome 24 Oct 2011
By Idiot
Bought as stop gap to replace a 6 burner range which was being left as part of house sale. 2 months later and haven't bought another stove as this is so good. Very impressed with ease of use and most of all price - you can't go wrong with this, ESP with 12 month warranty too. Excellent.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not hot enough 25 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase
For the last few years I have cooked using an electric double hob.
The previous 2 I have owned were each a different brand from one of the budget supermarkets. Both cooked brilliantly but only lasted a couple of years each.
I have a halogen oven from Andrew James which has been brilliant so I thought I would give this item a try. Delivered on time as expected and looks to be quite well made for the price but it just doesn't get hot enough. To keep a pan simmering you need to keep the lid on to keep the heat in which makes reducing sauces a challenge and even something as simple as a fried egg takes twice as long as my previous 2 hobs.
I will be waiting for a similar item to become available at one of the bargain supermarkets again then this one will be stuck in a cupboard for emergencies only.
If you want this kind of item for heating up a tin of beans then this one is probably ok but for anything else look elsewhere.
