The roots of Greece s current economic crisis can arguably be traced back to Andreas Papandreou, Greece s socialist Prime Minister and one of Europe s most divisive post-war politicians. Returning to Athens in 1959 after 20 years in the US where he had been a rising member of the American liberal establishment, Papandreou forged a social reform-oriented, nationalist politics in Greece that ultimately put him at odds with US foreign policy and made him the target of a pro-American military coup in 1967. Venerated by his admirers and despised by his detractors, the Harvard-educated Papandreou left in his wake no clear-cut answer to the question of who he was and what he stood for. Stan Draenos here chronicles the events, struggles and ideas that defined Papandreou s dramatic, intrigue-filled transformation from Kennedy-era modernizer to Cold War maverick. In the process Draenos examines the making of one of Greece s most complex politicians and assesses the explosive interplay of character and circumstance that generated Papandreou s contentious, but powerfully consequential politics.

Review

[Stan Draenos] has done a marvellous job of research on Andreas Papandreou and has brought him back to life. --Dale Jorgensen, Harvard University

I am most impressed with [Stan Draenos s] record of this very complex history and [his] amazing capacity for evoking the surrounding sense of drama. For one who witnessed the events, or some of them, [this] is an invaluable documentation of what went on. --Louis Lefeber, York University

Draenos has chosen a difficult and elusive topic-Andreas Papandreou-and has managed admirably to walk the tightrope of objectivity balancing between hagiography and demonization. He highlights the ambivalence of a brilliant man torn between the lure of academia and the charm of politics and between the vastness of America and the primordial call of a return to his roots. --Ted Couloumbis, University of Athens

Draenos has produced the first serious attempt in English to analyze the career and personality of one of the most fascinating and complex Greek political leaders of the 20th century, Andreas Papandreou. During his long tenure as prime minister, Papandreou infuriated his western allies, but also played a major role in transforming Greece into a modern European state. This book will be essential reading for anyone who wants to know how and why. --Monteagle Stearns, US Ambassador to Greece, 1981-85

'... a finely-worked study... This book takes readers deep inside a political drama whose consequences are still with us.' --The Economist

5.0 out of 5 stars An Impressive Achievement 28 Jan 2013
By Peter Richardson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This adroit portrait of Andreas Papandreou helped me understand how a Harvard-trained, Kennedy-style liberal might find himself behind bars in Greece after the 1967 coup. Groomed by Arthur Schlesinger Jr. and Clark Kerr, Papandreou left a tenured position at UC Berkeley and declined an offer to head UC Santa Cruz so he could enter Greek politics. He was a perfect candidate for the anti-Communist left that Schlesinger wished to promote, but America's Cold War ideology, when combined with the complexities of Greek domestic politics, made Papandreou a "difficult friend" of the United States. In his view, U.S. foreign policy was dominated by three groups--the military, intelligence services, and large economic interests--and therefore lacked the democratic input that U.S. domestic policy managed to include, however imperfectly. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a deeper understanding of Greek political history after the Second World War--and how that history was shaped in part by America's Cold War mentality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable addition to modern Greek history 15 Jan 2013
By Brady Kiesling - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Draenos gives what I think will be the definitive account of the transformation of Andreas Papandreou from American academic to the most important Greek politician of the post-Junta period. To my and later generations, whose image of Papandreou is that of the frail, discredited post-heart-surgery politician of 1988-96, Stan Draenos's political biography is an indispensable corrective. One begins to understand Papandreou's charisma and rhetorical brilliance, and to recognize the American roots of his attempt to remake Greek politics and society (whether one thinks of that transformation).

As a former U.S. diplomat, I was riveted by Draenos's account of Papandreou's gradual rupture with the U.S. government. Papandreou's Greek rivals, determined to demonize him, found the cold war zealots of the Embassy easy to manipulate. Papandreou's American liberal friends argued in vain that Papandreou's views were no more radical than those of President Kennedy's youthful idealists. By taking sides in a Greek political dispute and marginalizing a key interlocutor and resource, the Embassy encouraged Papandreou's drift toward more radical neutralist positions.

In describing the impact on the 1960s Greek establishment of Papandreou's political gifts, Draenos does not let his long association with the Papandreou family undermine his scholarly detachment and respect for the evidence. He blends Greek and American sources and perspectives into a seamless and convincing narrative. This volume, the first (one hopes) of several, is an impressive addition to our understanding of modern Greek history.
