More About the Author

Andrea Grace is a qualified health visitor, nurse and mental health nurse. She is also the mother of four children. She practiced as a health visitor for over ten years, and co - founded the highly regarded NHS sleep clinic in Muswell Hill, London.

She has worked independently as a sleep specialist since 1999, and during this time she has helped literally hundreds of families to overcome their children's sleep problems. Her work is recognized by many leading pediatricians, child health practitioners and health journalists.

Andrea is a prolific writer on children's sleep issues. She is the sleep expert for Mother & Baby Magazine and the author of "Andrea Grace's Gentle Sleep Solutions" She has featured on several TV and Radio programmes both in the UK and in Ireland. Andrea works both from her home in Highgate, North London, and from her Clinic in Harley St, London.

As a mum of 3 young children aged 5, 3 and 7 weeks I was interested to see if this book could offer me any more knowledge about that precious thing called sleep. I found it interesting and saw immediately how we'd gone wong with our second child - we suffered 3 years of lack of sleep and this book could have helped!
sleep deprevation is miserable and this book gives you information about how to start off on the right track and how to correct those sleep habits that may have been formed like relying on a dummy or only being able to get to sleep by drinking milk, twiddling hair, there are chapters on how to resolve these problems without leaving your child crying for hours on end. If you are reading this review then you possibly have a child with a sleep problem and buying this little book may help. Best of luck and sleep dreams! PS my youngest is sleeping from 7pm till 6am with no feeds!!

I've used this book to trouble shoot with both of my babies (who have had similar sleep problems to the 'Leo' case study) and the proposed approach has been really effective both times. It's made a huge difference to us. The book is easy to read and convincing. I recommend it to new parents all the time.

The things I liked about this book were: it did not make me feel guilty for having a non-sleeping baby (which many books do!) and she has a relaxed attitude to things like sleeping in a buggy / sling if that is what works for your baby. There are a lot of case studies in the book, so if one matches your situation, you have a personalised sleep programme ready for you.

Potential downsides (depending on your situation) were that I found that the advice is very centred on issues to do with breastfeeding at night and feeding to sleep. It has minimal information on napping, and other sleep problems such as early waking. With regards to feeding, she advocates full night weaning at 6 months. I found it hard to be fully on board with that recommendation.

I actually haven't managed to fully use the advice from this book - and there's the rub, it isn't particularly "gentle" and I think the decision to name the book with that word in the title is a bit cynical! She admits herself that there are only 2 main methods of sleep training: controlled crying and gradual withdrawal, and both will involve crying.

I don't think this book offers anything new, but it is simple and clear to get to grips with.

This book was recommended (TV and by author) as a good book to help babies, toddlers and young children of ALL ages with any sleep related problems. Totally NOT for children of all ages. The sleeping issues addressed here are purely for newborns up to about a year old. Any of the info in this book can be found in just about any BABY or new mother book. So, NO, my 4 year old did not sleep any better this year after reading this book.

There wasn't really anything in this book that was of much help to us, because we'd read most of it before in other more general books that provided other help besides sleep. For example, if you've got The New Contented Little Baby Book: The Secret to Calm and Confident Parenting, there's really no need for this book. Our baby also had reflux, which meant we had to deal with a lot of sleep issues in the first 8 months, and we found that Colic Solved: The Essential Guide to Infant Reflux and the Care of Your Crying, Difficult-To- Soothe Baby provided more practical help than many on this specific problem. We also found the sleep advice in Your Baby Month By Month: What to expect from birth to 2 years to be a great practical use, but this book also contains a wealth of practical help on many other topics. Grace's Gentle Sleep Solutions provides all the normal answers to a smaller list of questions, perhaps in more detail, but the extra detail didn't really add anything.

I immediately liked the book when I saw that the introduction was written three times and you could choose which one to read according to how much time you had. This is the most practical thing for a parent with a young baby. The advice is gentle and helpful and encourages you to analyse your baby's sleep habits and then gives practical plans to help with various problems. There are many case studies covering various different sleep related scenarios which I found particularly helpful. It's a bit like having a Supernanny/Baby Whisperer type help you...but a lot less intrusive.

I wish I had read this book whilst pregnant with my first child instead of battling for over a year with number 1 and 9 months with number 2 (at which point I bought this book). Andrea Grace has written the book in a very easy to read, down to earth and pratical style. She is not condescending but encourages you to think about what the cause of the problem is and provides a number of very 'do-able' ways to combat it. The methods suggested are indeed gentle yet also effective. Both my children (age 2 and age 10 months) sleep through the night (8pm-7am) and have 1.5-2 hours nap (together!) during the day. The night time sleep was achieved in 3 nights of training (which in the case of the littlest was amazing as we were usually up 2 or 3 times a night for 30-45 minutes and then often had him in bed with us from 3am!).
