a visual and aural delight for people of all ages,
By dan the fan (england,uk) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Live in Vienna [DVD] [2008] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
I enjoyed this dvd of a concert of classical and some modern music ( when I say modern I mean for example a song from the film "the sound of music" ) which is more than 2 hours long.
There are opera singers - male and female -lots of old fasioned waltzes by strauss accompanied by dancers from the vienna ballet and you get to see the action inside and outside the very beautiful Hofburg Palace. The audience sits outdoors in front of the palace ( an archaeological site had to be covered over to accommodate them)- half way through the concert Andre Rieu introduces the Mayoress of vienna who made this all possible.Andre Rieu speaks often in the concert and this adds to its interest because he always says something worth hearing. There are 25 sections of music and it is all either fast and lively or just plain lovely to hear.A dvd you could buy for the visual aspect alone - stunning buildings decor costumes and stage lighting. The highlights for me were the Laughing Song from Die Fledermaus ( what a beautiful dress the soprano is wearing),the Blue Danube and the bit where the orchestra eat some food while sitting at a table and playing their instruments perfectly.Something for everyone on this dvd.More than 100 million people around the world watched this concert on tv when it was originally broadcast. Why isn't Andre Rieu better known in the UK?

I totally agree with Dan's review, this DVD 'Andre Rieu Live in Vienna' concert and the subsequent one 'Andre Rieu at Schonbrunn, Vienna' are absolutely magnificent and outstanding I think of all his concerts. I also think that 'Dancing Through the Skies, Wedding at the Opera' is splendid for the elegant staging and the appearance of the Debutantes. Next choice would be the spectacular 'Andre Rieu Live in Australia' which is based on the Schonbrunn concert with the largest stage set recreating that palace ever built and was a very emotional occasion for Andre. Many others are 'must haves' including Dublin, Albert Hall, La Vie est Belle, the 'Maastrichts' 1,2,3, Christmas, Romantic Moments and well, I have nearly all of them! Andre is a great favourite with all the family and I am often asked to give one of his DVDs or CDs as a Christmas or birthday gift.
If you like this DVD you might also like the sensational 3 CD compilation 'Andre Rieu Eine Musikalische Traumereise' (an absolute bargain) which I have also reviewed

I got this on behalf of my Mum as she does not have the internet. She saw Andre Rieu on television and was totally amazed with him and his music. She found out that he had a DVD out called 'Live in Vienna', which we tried to get in town but was unable to. I told her that I could probable get it for her on 'Amazon' which I did. I can not tell you how amazed she was to get it when it came all the way from America to her house, and cost her less than she would have payed in town! I think that the DVD must be nearly worn out with the amount of times she has seen it. It was well worth the money spent.
