Andalucia in February,
This review is from: Andalucia: Costa Del Sol and Sierras (Landscapes) (Paperback)
The book covers areas up to two hours drive both north and south of Malaga city. We spent a week based in Competa, one hour north-west of Malaga, in February and used the Landscape guide for touring and walks. The car tour descriptions are easy to follow and informative. The walking details are excellent. Initially, there is clarity in the "How to get there" section. And for the walks themselves, the words, photos and maps are of such good quality that, taken together, they make following the route very easy. Fortunately, our walking speed coincided with the author's timings which meant that the regular time checks, which accumulate from the start point, were a helpful check on progress.

Indispensable for a first visit,
By G W (Yorkshire) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Andalucia: Costa Del Sol and Sierras (Landscapes) (Paperback)
I have used this walking guide on four visits to Andalucia. It is worth buying in England before travelling in order to plan your walks - indeed you may find it hard to find other than in Malaga or Marbella. The walks are sensibly graded from easy to strenuous, from a stroll along gravel tracks in woods (eg walk 19 Rio del Burgo)to what would be a good day's mountain walk in the Lake District (eg walk 20 Penon de los Enamorades). Without the book I would never have found these, as there were no maps available on my first visit and subsequent purchase of the official Spanish 1:25000 proved futile - they cover a tiny area and show many contours and few paths. In 2009 some good walking maps have started to appear which will complement this guide.
The walks have been carefully planned to be are almost always circular - you will probably have one hire car and there is little public transport to use. Advice is sound - take plenty of water (I have done some of them in August) and in winter there will be only a light covering of snow on the highest peaks. There is only one criticism I have of the book which stops me giving it five stars - that is tries to cover too large a grade of walks over too large an area. I have been based in the Malaga - Marbella region like most tourists. That means up to a two hour drive to the the start of walks near Ronda or Yunquera, and only half of the walks are accessible from one holiday destinataion. So you are buying a guide which covers about 100 miles east to west along the coast and 30 miles inland. Compare it to buying a walking guide with 25 walks covering the whole of Wales. Having said that, the five walks you may get out of the book will each be worth the price you paid for it. This review refers to the 1999 edition of the book.
