Biography

All Hail Bright Futures could be taken as both an ethos for the album and the band at this point in time. There is a new color scheme in place: new textures, emotions, sounds and voices. The 12-track, 43 minute album is dominated by a sunnier disposition, a positive uplift that more closely matches the euphoria the Northern Ireland trio has been instilling in audiences through their music in a ... 5.0 out of 5 stars A slice of perfection 25 April 2009
Format:Audio CD
I don't write reviews very often but I just had to for this magnificent album. I can honestly say there isn't a duff track on it.

What we have here are 11 guitar-driven instrumentals (on the whole) and each one has more ideas in it than most albums have in their entirety. The band do the quiet-loud-quiet thing to perfection and have a fantastic ear for melody. Songs constantly surprise you, never going quite where you expect them to go. There are no vocals as such, just the odd shout to drive the song along. Although, on "Don't Waste Time Doing Things You Hate" they... well, I won't spoil it. Suffice to say that it sent shivers down my spine when I first heard it.

If you like melodious, inventive guitar rock then give them a try. If the piano on "The Voiceless" doesn't make you smile from ear to ear then you are dead inside!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Album 8 Mar 2010
Format:MP3 Download
I bought the album after seeing the band open for Oceansize as I was really impressed by their performance.... And the album didn't dissapoint at all. I mean it's particular style of music so you have to like instrumental stuff. But for me the band is as good as all the masters of the post-rock genre (Mono, Mogwai, GSYBE..) and quite refreshing as well.

So if you're looking for a good post-rock album or if you're feeling a bit adventurous, buy it, you won'e be dissapointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars ASIWYFA- S/T LP Review (9/10) 31 Jan 2010
Format:Audio CD
It would be customary for the opening paragraph of a review, for "yet another" emerging post-rock band, to take the form of a checklist. Such a checklist would dismissively list the trademarks of said textbook post rock band and then try and address the reader's preconceptions. The band may or may not be very good. But what if the reader can't stand post rock? What if pretentious song titles and excessive track lengths make their blood boil? One read of this hypothetical checklist and click, their interest is elsewhere.

If this is you, hear me out a while longer. This band deserve your attention regardless of your personal pet peeves or gripes. Hell, for Belfast based (deep breath) And So I Watch You From Afar - hereby referred to as Afar - post rock is not even that accurate a genre to lump them into, despite the fact they're an instrumental band. Who knows, if you go as far as to check them out, you might find yourself reassessing your values. So let's take a closer look.

Set Guitars To Kill, the first track on Afar's eponymous debut album, does just that. A barrage of militaristic drums and feedback signals the beginning of the onslaught. At the one minute mark, the first of many iconic guitar signatures featuring throughout the album, enters in a cascade of feedback. The winding leads ebb and flow into one another gradually, creating a body of sound that rears up and eventually crashes back down around you with a devastating final riff. Who knew beauty could be done with such power?

Next up, A Little Solidarity Goes A Long Way is the single and one of the standout tracks on the album. You may be pleased to hear that it achieves this accolade with a truly concise running time of three and a half minutes.

4.0 out of 5 stars The sound of destruction! 17 Nov 2010
By klaher
Format:Audio CD
I'm a bit late picking up on this band from the North's debut album, released last year. Primarily an instrumental band, the title of the opening track, Set Guitars To Kill should tell you everything you need to know about it. It stomps all over the place with sledgehammer guitars pounding through the song. Absolutely awesome.

The album doesn't let up from there, offering visceral thrills not heard on an Irish album for some time. A Little Bit of Solidarity Goes A Long Way barrels along for all of 3 minutes.

They remind me of Mogwai with the metal turned up and a little Sonic Youth, Queens of the Stone Age and a bit of the doomier side of The Cure added in for good measure. A good example of this is Clench Fists, Grit Teeth... GO!, six minutes of pure metal carnage. They do take the occasional breather, allowing some tracks such as I Capture Castles to build up gradually, and even take something of mid-song siesta in Start A Band, which itself is almost like 3 songs in one.

Later on the album Tip of the Hat, Punch in the Face reminds me of forgotten Irish band Coldspoon Conspiracy. There's a lovely Sonic Youth style mid-song break with lots of ringing trebly guitars in Don't Waste Time Doing Things You Hate, before some "na na na" vocals, one of the few vocals on the album. Final track Eat the City, Eat it Whole perfects the art of the slow build.

It's the kind of music that influences behaviour, you'll definitely want to be hell-raising after getting THIS into your ears. Or breaking something. So... stop what you're doing and buy this album immediately.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth Watching From Any Distance (7/10) 27 May 2009
By Gannon TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Indulgent, smile-inducing post-rock with its guitars firmly set to rock, despite their claims on `Set Guitars To Kill', this is Sigur Rós as envisaged by prog-metallers, Godspeed! with less intricacy, but everything turned up to eleven. A few quiet intros, like on `Start A Band' lull the collection toward punishing batteries. It could be Explosions In The Sky on steroids, Mono flexing their inner rock. It could even be an instrumental ... Trail Of Dead album; the band name certainly suggests an affiliation.

Herein however, lies the problem, whilst worthy, it is resolutely stamped with others' work. Not that that inhibits its enjoyment; just try and stop air-drumming or furiously introspective head banging at inopportune moments during a daily commute.
