I have always enjoyed Jeffrey Archer's short stories, and so was really looking forwards to this one, but have ended up feeling really disappointed.
I found the stories either rather boring or very predictable on the whole, and was not 'gripped' by any of them. Unlike his previous collections, none of the stories in here struck me as being memorable - which is a shame from such a talented writer of short stories.

Sorry, Jeffrey! Not one of your best!

Not Bad 22 Sep 2010

Not the best book of his short stories but still enjoyable. The endings to the stories just didn't have the same twist as his previous efforts.

It may be easy to criticise Archer's lack of characterisation but he does tell a cracking good short story. Two of my favourite writers are Roald Dahl and Somerset Maugham, both short story specialists, and while Archer isn't quite in that class, his work is immensely enjoyable.
I read this in a couple of days and to use the cliche 'I couldn't put it down' would be an overstatement, but I was compelled by it. It's cosy (aside from one tale about prisoners), it's comforting, it's pleasurable, it's nice, it's the sort of book to read in your favourite armchair.
The endings may occasionally be underwhelming, but it's always fun getting there.

OK, but not Archer at his best....
Archer's latest collection of short stories is unfortunately not his best work.

and thereby hangs a tail
not completely up to the very high standard I'm used by this author. Some of the tails are predictable especially if you have read his other collections.

And Thereby Hangs A Tale
Nice easy to read selection of short stories and ideal for a long flight. However, I did find a lot of the stories predictable, I would have preferred some surprises.

Thereby Hangs a Tale
Jeffrey Archer's books are amazing. He has a brilliant imagination, his storytelling keeps one spellbound. I just love his books. This one is no different - a thoroughly good read.

Old Story, New Iteration
As has been my experience, Mr. Archer tells a fine tale with a spare use of English language. The story is one told in other forum, but retold with flair. Read more
