Chapman recorded for Harvest and Deram Records for whom he set out an impressive stall of tough, moody and occasionally melancholic songs, strong on melody and lyrically rich. This live set from 1977 is something of a find, catching the man with a truncated version of his touring band (hence the title) at full steam. An acclaimed guitarist, Chapman shares the stage with comparable talents in Lindisfarne bassist Rod Clements and a legendary drummer in Keef Hartley. The result is a meaty, FX-fuelled rock out (with bags of spacey reverb) covering some of his best known songs including 'Kodak Ghosts', 'Dog's Got More Sense', 'It Didn't Work Out' and 'In The Valley', skilfully fleshed out by the trio who have clearly been on the road together for some time as evidenced in a tight, well-drilled performance. The booklet notes reflect that this was 'no pick-up band band, playing folk with amps, but a three headed beast of equals'. Spot on.
