Book Description

In her own words, for the first time, Doreen Lawrence tells the heartbreaking story of her son's murder and how she fought to change the British criminal justice system forever. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

In April 1993, Stephen Lawrence was murdered by a group of young white men on a street in south-east London. No one was ever convicted of his killing. From the first police investigation onwards, the case was badly mishandled. In the end, long after the case against the five suspects had been dropped, the government had to give in to mounting pressure and hold a public inquiry, which became the most explosive in recent British legal history. Sir William Macpherson concluded that the Metropolitan Police had been 'institutionally racist', and handed out damning judgements of its attitude to the victim and his family. These facts, though, leave the reader unprepared for Doreen Lawrence's own story of her son's murder. Here, in this raw, honest book, she writes about her life for the first time, and recreates the pain, frustration and bafflement she experienced as she realized that there would never be a moment when she could say to herself that justice had been done. She writes about her difficult childhood in Jamaica. She takes us through the unimaginable events of 1993 and the years that followed as they happened to her. She writes about the breakdown of her marriage, of her terrible moments of withdrawal from the world. But no matter how depressed or marginalized she feels, she keeps her determination to go on fighting for truth. An inspirational book from one of the most extraordinary British women of our time, "And Still I Rise" demands to be read.

A Learning Experience 6 July 2006
Format:Hardcover
As I was only a teenager myself when the events in Ms Lawrence's book happened, I had only the knowledge of what the media had portrayed.

Upon reading 'And Still I rise' I was genuinely touched and moved by the honesty shown by Doreen Lawrence, and the pain that she still obviously feels at the non - finalisation of her experiences.

I never before realised the severity of the hurdles that she had to overcome, and indeed the severity of the ignorance she so desperately fought to combat - and yet she still asks for no pity.

A touching and revealing account of an unbelievable struggle in the face of adversity in both private and public settings.

For anyone who may think that the subject of this book is long dealt with - please read it, you will be only left with admiration and respect for the author.

Ms Lawrence, if you should read this, may you continue to rise!

I bought this book as I was only six at the time Stephen was murdered and as a mixed race child I thought it was important to understand the implications of this terrible crime. I literally could not put this book down once I began reading it, I am amazed by the courage of Doreen and how she is still battling to obtain justice for her son which is to be greatly admired. This book allows the reader to acknowledge the true version of events surrounding the case, and not the portrayal which the media illustrated. I hope Doreen is able to obtain justice for Stephen after all the years she has spent tormented by this nightmare, and admire her honesty and courage in penning this detailed account.

I was lent this book by a work contact, and read it as holiday reading, not really thinking how the book might affect me.

I genuinely believe that this book is a MUST READ!

If ever the judicial system, our government, and the general attitude of the majority white community has ever been challenged, then I believe it is thanks to the determination of Doreen Lawrence and her family. I actually felt ashamed to be white.

What the murder of Stephen Lawrence continues to show is how easy it is to dismiss the trauma and pain of a black family in this country.

Please read this book....it is very powerful, will bring out a lot of anger as the story progresses, and will ultimately change your attitude to this "liberal country" which perports to be democratic to all, whether white or black!

By the way, I am white, in my 50's, and live in Kent. I used to live in London and worked with the Afro-Carribean community in the 70's.

Doreen Lawrence, if you read this review, thank you for your courage!
