There are a few people who don't quite get what this film is about. There is no message in it, no modern day psycho babble claptrap, and nothing to latch on to for the purists who think there should be depth and 'meaning' to everything in life. What it is, is a simple, honest film, with a good build up of suspenful tension. The idea behind all films is to suspend disbelief for an hour or so, and be entertained by what you see. Indeed, with 'And soon the Darkness', what you see is what you get. A decent story, well played out by a competent cast. The story was written by Brian Clemens who penned so many of the TV series The Avengers, and was released in 1970. I may be wrong, but I believe the Avengers is a groovy cult series with a worldwide appreciation. How can Clemens be a genius on the one hand for giving us The Avengers and a be seen as a duffer for 'And soon the darkness'? If you enjoy the Avengers you'll enjoy this. It's as simple as that really. Entertainment without the strings attached. No doubt many of the people who knocked this film are the type who would prefer deeper stuff which explores mankinds relationship with his owner inner turmoil and struggles to find his own true place in the grand order of things. If that floats thier boat, great - they are welcome to it. Just bear in mind, it's a film of it's time (1970) without pretensions of any sort. Enjoy !
