Released amidst rumours of romance between co-stars Angelina Jolie and soon-to-be-divorced Brad Pitt, Mr. and Mrs. Smith offers automatic weapons and high explosives as the cure for marital boredom. The premise of this exhausting action-comedy (no relation to the Alfred Hitchcock comedy starring Carole Lombard and Robert Montgomery) is that the unhappily married Smiths (Pitt and Jolie) will improve their relationship once they discover their mutually-hidden identities as world-class assassins, but things get complicated when their secret-agency bosses order them to rub each other out. There's plenty of amusing banter in the otherwise disposable screenplay by Simon Kinberg (xXx: State of the Union, Fantastic Four), and director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) gives Pitt and Jolie a slick, glossy superstar showcase that's innocuous but certainly never boring. It could've been better, but as an action-packed summer confection, Mr. and Mrs. Smith kills two hours in high style. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

Action comedy starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as John and Jane Smith, a suburban couple whose marriage has started to go a bit stale after five or six years. Both wish for more excitement in their relationship, but as it happens, each of them is finding plenty of thrills elsewhere. Both Jane and John are world-class assassins who will take on perilous missions for the right price, but neither is aware of the other's secret life - Jane thinks her husband runs a successful construction company, and John believes his wife works on Wall Street. However, when John and Jane are both assigned to take out the same target, one Benjamin Danz (Adam Brody), they become aware of each other's secret lives, and suddenly both their careers and their marriage go through some dramatic and potentially deadly changes.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Can't Believe the Anti Hype 25 Nov 2012
I really don't get these negative comments for Mr and Mrs Smith at all and am wondering if these people have had a complete humour by pass before inserting the silver disk into the DVD machine. First off this film rather surprisingly is incredibly insightful about the politics involved in marriage. There are a number of brilliantly observed scenes where the couple are discussing décor or their relationship with a therapist which have the complete ring of truth about them. All this is shoe horned into a ridiculous plot involving two spies who are married but don't know the other has the same job. People who criticise the film for this ridiculousness really shouldn't even bother watching it because part of what makes this great is the stupid premise. It turns into a film take on the great cartoon strip from Mad magazine. "Spy vs Spy". Their attempts to kill each other become more and more ludicrous and the body count just keeps on mounting. Has there ever been a film where death and destruction is this much fun?
It's also possibly the most subversive "popcorn" movie I have ever seen. The fight in the kitchen has to be one of the funniest fight scenes since Trinity hung up his hat. There is a sequence where Pitt is kicking his wife seemingly to death behind the kitchen counter and it is hilarious. It works because this is a complete fantasy in which the wife gives at least as good as she gets ("Whose the Daddy now"?) and both spouses are incredible killing machines who happen to realise whilst they are trying to destroy each other that they are madly in love.
In summation, it's a bloody good laugh, so there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Congrats to the newly weds Mr & Mrs Pitt 29 Aug 2014
I just read that these two stars tied the knot so I thought I would give them a review.
I saw so many 1 star reviews and wondered what the hell is wrong with everyone. I thought this movie was hilarious they had me in stiches for most of the movie. I am a big fan of both Pitt and Pitt lol so it was a no brainer to me to buy this dvd and watch it if I need a giggle. It delivers no matter how many times iv seen it.

Im not sure why everyone is so aggressive when it comes to huge celebrities like these two. as far as I can tell they are very decent people and are quite talented. I would always support any work they come out with....ooh maleficent is coming out on dvd soon....YES...cant wait. ehem sorry.

I really think this movie is great. I know it is beyond silly at some parts but that's kind of why I love it, its so goofy in a very sophisticated kind of way. I refuse to take anything coming out of Hollywood seriously so I actually enjoy them better. Great cast, funny one liners, funny story of two married assassins that end up having an out scrap with fists and guns. I broke my sh*t laughing when Jane gets bashed into the clock. Was it a clock or mirror? I think it was both, who cares, she broke some serious glass. there is a sense of fight club in here where people think its funny to punch some one else in the face. I think that's brilliant it lets me have a good laugh without fail.

This is a keeper for me. Wishing the newly weds endless years of happiness together.

4.0 out of 5 stars BRAD VS ANGIE, GUNS A GO-GO, ONE COOL MOVIE 23 Nov 2005
By Phillysound2 VINE VOICE
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
After all the tabloid shenanigans I had to see this for myself with a bunch of friends. I know what a good film is and this film scores because the leads are gorgeous - I mean c'mon they just are - and the film is pretty good. Style edges over content but that's OK. The film never promises anything other than what it is: a noisy, sexy action film with a cleverish twist. This husband and wife are bored with each other and in marriage counselling. Luckily they are professional, but secret assassins (The Long Goodbye has a similar twist,) and are lucky enough to be pitched against each other. That's just the kind of partner action they (and a few of us out here) need to kick-start romance! It's a fun filled twist to the usual run of the mill action films. With the dud reviews, we were expecting to be disappointed but we had a surprisingly good time. Brad and Angelina try to outdo each other in the action and gun stakes. Angelina wins out (she's has grace and guts and Brad's just a bit more careful) but I bet gentle Brad loved every minute - we would have! And now, apparently, they're getting married. Good luck to them. They look like soul mates and we wish them all the best. There does seem to be an unnecessary reprise at the end that makes the film a little too long but the pay off is we get to see Brad in his undershorts (well, if you like Brad you'll appreciate it). Also they are assassins -why should we like them? That's my main gripe. Nevertheless, this is a favourite 2005 film of mine because it isn't po faced, it isn't pretentious - it's just fast, sexy, amoral, romantic and, yes, violent, fantasy fun. Sometimes that fits the bill. If you're in the mood, get some pop corn in, turn the sound up on your cinema system and get down with Brad and Angie. Oh and where's the video game? This might be one I'd buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Film 5 April 2013

Great action film from beginning to end. Better than the recent James Bond Films. Good entertainment, you can watch over & over again and still see bits you missed the first time.
