Coming of age drama exploring the complexities of children losing their innocence and adults struggling to guide them. In the suburbs of America, three close knit 12-year-olds - introverted Jacob (Conor Donovan), precocious Malee (Zoe Weizenbaum) and vulnerable Leonard (Jesse Camacho) - start down the path of self-discovery and begin to distinguish their own voices from those of their parents. Sparked by the tragic death of Jacob's twin brother, the trio band together as they grapple with feelings of revenge, the burden of grief and the indelible experiences of growing up.

12 And Holding revolves around the lives of four 12 year old children who live in the quiet suburbs of New Jersey. Rudy and Jacob are identical twins though by personality are complete opposites. Rudy is self-confident, confrontational and extrovert, though Jacob, (partly due to a facial birthmark), is quiet, shy and introvert. The twins' two friends are Malee, a bright and articulate daughter of a local psychiatrist and Leonard an overweight child whose life revolves around food. When Rudy is killed in a horrific prank that goes wrong, the film then splits into three paths following the separate lives of each child.
As in Director Michael Cuesta's previous film, 'L.I.E' the story looks at kids who are mature beyond their years, conflicted and painfully lonely. The writing as well as the acting is superb. The young cast give remarkably mature performances and director Michael Cuesta skilfully pulls you in by portraying real people in real situations only telling you what you need to know, and making you care for each of the films main characters. And like Cuesta's previous film, 'L.I.E' the story comes to end far too soon, not tying up all the loose ends, not giving you complete closure, and as a viewer leaving you wanting more. Thinking about how the children's lives would have continued is something that'll sit in the back of your mind and haunt you for days later. If you liked low key character based indie films like 'L.I.E.', 'Somersault', 'Me And You And Everyone We Know' or 'The Station Agent' then '12 And Holding' is a film which you shouldn't miss

After making a name for himself with the controversial, but honestly made 'L.I.E.', director Michael Cuesta returns with his second outing '12 And Holding', and continues his focus on the little covered ground known as modern youth.

This is a haunting coming-of-age film about children, bound by a common, shocking tragedy, who struggle to get on with life and overcome their own troubling problems. Despite the severity of issues conveyed in this film's overlapping vignettes, it never becomes melodramatic. Artful screen writing and direction infuse humour in the telling of these children's stories; stories rich with characters who are colourful, but never contrived. All of the children provide very genuine, endearing performances, essential if the audience is going to empathise with them and their disturbing behaviour. Depending on who you are, this movie will most likely make you uncomfortable at times, but no matter how horrifying and even monstrous these children's actions may be, they never lose their appealing and disarming qualities as children. These are ultimately good kids, even the most troubled, who easily win your affection.

During the course of the movie, one of the children queries the others by asking, "Do you know 90% of people's problems are due to their inability to get over the past?" All of these children will be faced with this challenge. You hope all will overcome this obstacle, but sadly, not all of them will or should be able to get over their past. One of my favourite films of 2006...

As a Renner fan girl I had to watch this movie. And I'm so glad I did!
I usually don't go for smaller independent movies, but I must say, this one deserves to be seen by everybody, which I'm sure it won't be... sadly.

It's a gruesome story about 12 year olds with serious issues but without help from the adults in their lives.
It is so frustrating if you remember being a kid and so sad if you see their troubles from an adult point of view.

I highly recommend this movie if you want something to think about and be moved by.

An under rated film, with a good cast, it has a moments of dark humor and moments of tension.
I brought it because Jeremy Renner was it and it had got a good write up.

I first brought this film on Prime and then found that it had been taken down off Prime by Amazon for some reason without them telling me. So I had lost the copy I had paid for.
Amazon refunded me the money after I contracted them, and brought the DVD instead.

What can I say? This movie starts with a heartbreaking bang, and from there on and out, you keep waiting for the next big blast. And the movie ends the way its start with what is a tragedy.
The film sets focus on children and parents relationship. How destructive parents can be without meaning to be, and what children is willing to do just to feel like they matter to their parents.

This is a great film. The actors all put in a great performance but I think especially the young girl. She was truely believable in her role. it has everything a good film should have and more.
