This review is for the Ancol Shock Absorber. Please see the video for my full review and comments on this device.

I tend to use a 30 foot training lead whilst out walking my dog in the fields. However, if she sees another dog in the distance she starts to run towards it and when she reaches the end of her lead she suddenly comes to a halt. On a couple of occasions she has simply been so fast and strong the lead has pulled completely free of my hands. However, when she does come to an abrupt stop I have experienced intense pain in my arm and shoulder due to the force she has built up. I have also noticed that her neck gets yanked right back and I've been worried about damage being caused to her.

I bought this bungee shock absorber to try and help reduce the force being caused by her abrupt stops and to some extent it has done this. However, please be aware that it won't stop your dog from lunging, it is just intended to help absorb some of the force and to that effect it is successful.

This is a very simple device consisting of a black bungee cord, one chrome end ring and one chrome hook. The hook attaches to your dog's collar. You then attach your normal lead to the other end of this shock absorber. If your dog lunges, the bungee cord part absorbs some of the force created.

It is well made; all of the finishing is excellent and the overall device is sturdy and definitely won't fall apart. I have used mine many times and it still looks perfect.

It is easily cleaned by just wiping over with a damp cloth or running the bungee cord under water. I haven't soaked it completely because of the chrome fixings, but they have been in contact with plenty of rain water and there is no sign as yet of any rust or stiffening of the hook.

I have been really glad that I purchased this as it has helped reduce some of the pain I have experienced. The key word however is 'reduce' it hasn't eliminated it completely.

Takes the strain out of walking on the flexi lead. once at the end of the lead she happily bounces along on the bungee and i don't get my shoulder pulled out of it socket when she hits the end of the extending lead. the bungee is quite long so does tend to dangle on the floor sometimes as i only use a very light flexi lead but it works well on the heavier flexi for the golden retriever.
The bungee is nice and strong.
good product.

I use this for my beagle mix who has only two speeds - stop and full throttle. I have to keep him on a lead in busy places like the beach as his recall suffers immensely when there's so many distractions, but I like him to be able to have a bit of freedom so I either use a long line or one of the retractable leads. We are lucky enough to live right on the coast so it seemed a shame to avoid the beach altogether. It was becoming a real pain with him running off whenever he saw another dog, only to reach the end of the lead and have all that force stop on his neck, sometimes he would actually do flips from the jolt on the collar, it was really horrible to watch and can't be nice for him (they don't seem to learn though, eh?!). Not only this but also the force on my elbow, and shoulders. A few times I'd sprain a muscle and end up with a sore arm for a few days.
I went looking for this after I saw another dog with a little metal spring on its collar. I wasn't too fond of that type as it seems more liable to break and would mean he'd have a bit of metal clanging on his tags all the time.

The bungee has been fantastic since arriving. It is really well made and I have total faith that it wont snap off during a walk. The metal fittings are of good quality and the clip is strong but moves smoothly and is easy to take on and off the collar.
It's great for long line work, but I certainly wouldn't use it for close control or training. You need a good contact between you and your dog in order to have control and be responsive to the dog's movements. I tend to walk the dog on a short, normal lead to the beach then swap leads when I arrive. It's a little bit annoying having to carry an additional lead but I wouldn't like leading my dog along the busy road with a bungee lead.

My dog tends to want to chase after cats or sheep or the like. He also has a tendency to stop suddenly. Both of these behaviours caused undue stress on my arms at my end of the lead. So, when I read about this shock absorber, I thought I'd give it a try.
Don't be confused, it will not stop your dog from pulling; it is not a magic replacement for training. What it does is absorbs the shock of the pull on you and your dog.
I have purchased this twice because my husband left the first one behind at a holiday rental. I missed the shock absorption so I bought a replacement.

My dog is a puller and will suddenly lurch towards things she wants to investigate. I have carpel tunnel and find the constant pulling makes my hand tingle. My husband has a bad shoulder from a damaged rotator cuff and this has taken the sting out of walking her. So from our point of view it's an all around winner
