Connolly's work as an illustrator is well known for its unrivaled grasp of both artistry and informed accuracy. As we have come to expect of him over the years, he has done an excellent job of illustrating Andrew Solway's text to make it as accessible as possible for the reader.

Solway's text is both well informed and pitched at the youger reader. However, it avoids using a patronising tone and can be easily and satisfactorily understood by anyone from the age of around ten up, making it a useful resource for adult and older child alike.
It also gives the reader well informed access to a wider context to what they might otherwise have already known about ancient Rome. My only gripe is that the format is really too small to allow more than a couple of pages for any particular aspect of Roman life and so it is really a quick survey through a number of topics which really deserve their own volumes.
In fairness though, some of these subjects are already covered by other titles in the same series and indeed, many of Connolly's illustrations for it are also to be found in these other volumes.
The space allowed here for each aspect of life would probably be satisfactory for the older child of ten or slightly older, but an adult will be likely to be left wanting to know more about some things which he or she will feel could have been treated more fully.

As would be expected of a man who began his career as an illustrator, Connolly's illustrations are first class and amply demonstrate what is talked about in the text, meaning that the reader is not left in doubt as to what they are reading about. If a picture normally paints a thousand words (as they say), then Connolly's paint two thousand. He is not afraid though to admit that when there is not enough surviving information to create an accurate reconstruction painting that his reconstruction is little more than an informed guess, leaving readers able to distinguish between the reconstructions based on sound and verifiable knowledge and those which are informed guesses.

All in all, an excellent read for the younger reader and not a bad introduction for the interested adult.

Fabulously illustrated social history for latter elementary school 13 Aug 2006
By Lydia Joyce - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
SERIES: This books is written in the same style and format as ANCIENT GREECE, also by Peter Connolly. [For older readers, try THE ANCIENT CITY by Peter Connolly (middle to high school level), which covers the same topics at greater depth and with more specific historical contest.]

FORMAT: Both books in the series are formatted two-page spreads centered on a single topic, consisting of a few paragraphs of text plus Connolly's illustrations combined with blurbs about them. The first two-page spread is centered on orienting the reader in the Roman Empire and in Rome itself. The rest of the book is devoted to social history, covering these sections: At home, Houses, On the streets, Food from abroad, Shopping, Work, The theatre, At the races, The amptheatre, The baths, Eating out, The Roman forum, Many gods.

EVALUATION: The pictures are fabulous, and the text is clear and informative and complements the pictures well. Very enganging and very highly recommended.
