Synopsis
Until the exploits of the Vikings drew attention to northern lands, the Orkneys were virtually on the edge of the known world, but their inhabitants were rarely slow to develop new skills or to adopt new ideas. What is remarkable about the Orkneys is not simply that a great number of monuments have survived, but that so many are in themselves outstanding human achievements. This title is part of the same series as Ancient Monuments of Western Isles (ISBN 0 11 495201 9, published June 1994) and Ancient Monuments of Shetland (ISBN 0 11 494200 5, published April 1993). Both titles are also available through HMSO Books.
