Product Description

Review

"Now in Athens Museum, it has generated a fascinating tale, well told" - Greek-o-File, Autumn 2004.

Product Description

This is the true history of an astonishing machine during the time when the island of Rhodes was the centre of both cultural and intellectual activity within the Roman Empire. Made on the island of Rhodes around 71BC, the computer was lost beneath the waves for almost 2000 years. Recovered in 1910, the Antikythera machine caused much controversy in scientific circles of the day for the technology incorporated in the device was far ahead of its time. This miraculous mechanical computer, now on display in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, has an exceptional history. The author provides us with something more than the story of its manufacture and use.

A little treasure 20 April 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
A short book in two parts. The first part is a story that I presume has been created around what could have happened at the time the Antikythera Mechanism found its way to the bottom of the ocean, and how it was rediscovered more recently.

The second part of the book isn't a story at all. Instead you are given a not too detailed analysis of how the mechanism works.

This is everything you need to be able to answer the simple question of what is it, and also where did it come from.

Interesting archeological detective work 10 Dec 2011
By Rob Brennan - Published on Amazon.com
The author has constructed an interesting but speculative story of how this mechanism was first constructed on the island of Rhodes, and then found its way to the seabed off the coast of the island of Antikithera, between Greece and Crete. In 1901, almost 2000 years later, it was found by sponge divers, and eventually brought to the surface. It provided a challenging task for archeologists and others to work out what its remarkable purpose was.
