A good, small source of information, textual and pictorial, bringing to life various historical and archaeological interpretations. As a paperback, the version is cheaper than hardback, but not as durable. The title could be misleading because every section, whether Houses, Social Life and Work and particularly Religion and Government, deal almost exclusively with Athens; there is little mention of any other city. For example, there is no mention in the Governement section of Thebes and Corinth, both oligarchies, or Sparta, a dyarchy of Kings; nor is there any information about the unique, even for Greece, social system of Sparta. The title should be "Ancient Athens"; unfortunately, the material in the book, with additional material, is reproduced in another, but more expensive book, "the Ancient City".
