Product Description

This is one of two new titles from the acclaimed master of recreating the ancient world. Peter Connolly's superb illustrations bring to life the world of ancient Greece, in the 5th century BC, when Athens was home to some of the greatest artists and thinkers in history. All aspects of life in the city are revealed, as we watch Athenians in their homes, at the theatre, at work, at worship and at play. Perfect to support homework for children aged 8+ . Peter Connolly is a best-selling author and illustrator of the ancient world. His previous books with Oxford include Pompeii, The Roman Fort, The Legionary, The Cavalryman, The Ancient Greece of Odysseus, The Holy Land and The Ancient City. These have sold over 250,000 copies in English, and have been translated into many other languages. Peter Connolly is an Honorary Research Fellow of the Institute of Archaeology, London.

Ancient Greece 7 April 2010
Format:Paperback
A good, small source of information, textual and pictorial, bringing to life various historical and archaeological interpretations. As a paperback, the version is cheaper than hardback, but not as durable. The title could be misleading because every section, whether Houses, Social Life and Work and particularly Religion and Government, deal almost exclusively with Athens; there is little mention of any other city. For example, there is no mention in the Governement section of Thebes and Corinth, both oligarchies, or Sparta, a dyarchy of Kings; nor is there any information about the unique, even for Greece, social system of Sparta. The title should be "Ancient Athens"; unfortunately, the material in the book, with additional material, is reproduced in another, but more expensive book, "the Ancient City".

Connolly's work as an illustrator is well known for its unrivaled grasp of both artistry and informed accuracy. As we have come to expect of him over the years, he has done an excellent job of illustrating Andrew Solway's text to make it as accessible as possible for the reader.

Solway's text is both well informed and pitched at the youger reader. However, it avoids using a patronising tone and can be easily and satisfactorily understood by anyone from the age of around ten up, making it an equally useful resource for adult and older child alike.
It also gives the reader well informed access to a wider context to what they might otherwise have already known about ancient Greece.

As would be expected of a man who began his career as an illustrator, Connolly's illustrations are first class and amply demonstrate what is talked about in the text, meaning that the reader is not left in doubt as to what they are reading about. He is not afraid though to admit when there is not enough surviving information to create an accurate reconstruction painting that his reconstruction is little more than an informed guess, leaving readers able to distinguish between the reconstructions based on sound and verifiable knowledge and those which are informed guesses.

All in all, an excellent read and a good resource which should be recommended reading for anyone wanting to inform themselves about ancient Greece without having to first wade through thick academic tomes.
