Product Description

The greatest civilization of all time. The story of ancient Egypt can be told through the reigns of her most powerful rulers. From the emergence of the first Pharaoh, Narmer, to the death of Cleopatra in 30 B.C. we chronicle the lives of the men and women who commanded this ancient civilization. In their quest for eternity, the great pharaohs pushed the limits of art, science and imagination. The result was the creation of the world's most majestic monuments, we take a close look at the work that artisans, engineers and labourers devoted their entire lives to.

Includes:
The Great Pharaohs Part 1, The Great Pharaohs Part 2,  The Great Sphinx,  Tombs Of The Gods,  The Great Builders Of Egypt,  King Ramses 11,  The Library Of Alexandria,  The Rosetta Stone.

Welcome to Egypt 18 Feb 2011
Format:DVD
Having been on the holiday of a lifetime to Egypt recently, I jumped at the chance to add this box set to my already large collection. I was thrilled with it. Historically spot on; beautifully produced; packaged sensibly and elegantly. The various discs cover everything an interested party would want to know about the ancients. Would recommend it to everyone, even the academics.

I expected this to be a single, coherent series but it isn't. It's just a collection of programmes that were made at different times by different people. Mainly, they do get the message across but those made originally for the American market are really quite poor. They have that kind of 30's style narration, using flowery language and avoiding too many big words. You know the kind of thing! I equate it to American style "wildlife" programmes where they depict animals to synchronised cartoon music.

Leonard Nimoy narrates the 'Sphinx' episode for some reason. His dreary, monotone voice is enough to send you to sleep.

The other issue is that some programmes were made in the 90's or perhaps even late 80's and I bet there have been more discoveries since then.

My advice is to avoid this "series" and try to find something more recent.

It would be impossible to cover a subject as rich and diverse as the 3000 year history of Ancient Egypt in any depth in a documentary lasting just a few hours. However, this 8 DVD box set does provide a good basic introduction to several key features, which should whet many an appetite for more.

This box set would be a good starting point for someone keen to gain a foundation in the subject before moving on to more detailed studies of particular areas. Nevertheless, having gained a reasonable knowledge of Ancient Egypt over the years as an enthusiastic amateur, I still enjoyed these DVDs and found them to be interesting, well presented and a pleasure to watch. I'm sure many other viewers familiar with the subject to varying degrees will also enjoy this series and I thought the box set was certainly worth the money.

Not really that good at all...
Poorly presented and dumbed down with a droning commentary. Don't waste your money cos even though it's cheap, it's still not good value.
