Erich von Däniken's Chariots of the Gods provides the inspiration for this History Channel series, which takes UFOs and extraterrestrials deadly seriously. Over five episodes, it explores phenomena throughout the ages that defy explanation. The first, "Evidence," looks at Indian aeronautical texts, the Great Pyramid of Giza, and the Saqqara Bird, an Egyptian carving that anticipates the airplane. Legendary Times publisher and consulting producer Giorgio A. Tsoukalos feels that items like the figurine "have nothing in common with anything similar in nature." That's a matter of opinion, though other authors, engineers, and investigators tend to agree, which isn't a problem in and of itself, except there are few dissenting voices.
In "The Visitors," "The Mission," and "Closer Encounters," the show travels to Peru, Mali, Iraq, and other locations to discuss elongated skulls, cattle mutilation, and primitive stargazing (the theory that King Tut might have been part-alien seems pretty far-fetched). Further references to the Knights Templar and the Ark of the Covenant, which some believe lies beneath an island in Nova Scotia, bring Spielberg blockbusters, like Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, to mind. The series concludes with "The Return," a look at sightings and attempts to communicate with aliens by NASA and SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence).
Like von Däniken's controversial bestseller, Ancient Aliens presents intriguing data but calls for a healthy degree of skepticism, since there's more speculation on offer than verifiable fact (the boisterous Swiss scribe also appears in the program). The academic speakers make valid points, but a few experts seem less credible. It's easier, for instance, to trust an MIT or UCLA scholar over a radio host or crop circle researcher. This three-disc set concludes with a bonus episode, "Chariots, Gods and Beyond," which surveys the links between theology and ancient astronaut theory. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Format:DVD
A very extraordinary box set in every way. I bought this as I was intrigued by the subject matter but must admit I was quite skeptical, and this boxset does a great job of laying out very well thought out, intelligent arguments in a very professional, well presented manner. It's easy with this material to be too bombastic or fantastical and - whilst the series does present some truly astounding theories - each one is well evidenced and presented as a question, rather than as fact. This is very much the Von Daniken way and is a nice dovetail to his works. Some of the 'experts' are a little too myopic in their views, however it doesn't detract as the strength here is in the evidence presented - it doesn't try to sway you with faux-scientific opinion, it just serves up a series of facts and asks you the question "what do you think?". And that's it's great strength.
Would heartily recommend, not just for UFO/Alien enthusiasts, but for anyone with even the slightest interest in history, astronomy, evolution or civilisation.

(Small point of note, I have seen this on the History channel where it has an English accented narrator, this box set has an American narrator - as I presume this is the original recording - however, personally I think the American narrator does a better job).

Format:DVD
Even if you do not believe what they are telling, it is still very interesting to view this and to listen to the hypothesis of some people whose mind is not stupified by the rubbish the history lessons in school have teached us. Many of the things we learn at school are demonstrable wrong and still the childrens heads are filled with this nonsense. Since the schoolbooks are wrong, why couldn't the opinions offered to us here be the simple truth? A very good series with some real entousiast speakers. English is not my native tongue, but what surprised me is that I had no problem to comprehend what is told here. Even some older family members (who only understand 'As the World Turns English') could enjoy this without the (absent) subtitles. I think it would be good to view this with your children, just to keep them thinking!
One remark for amazon.uk: since you are also 'the' amazon for the Netherlands, it would be very nice if more DVD's could be supplied with subtitling or, at least, please mention the correct spoken languages and subtitles. This is a small minus, the product however deserves *****

and that is this : We have a history as a species that has lost a VAST amount of know-how. Aliens !? who knows, probably not in my opinion but monuments were created thousands of years ago that we can not create today with all our machines !? let alone in "their" time with the supposed tools they had. This is a FACT. and the historians of the "mainstream" ignore this. I wonder why ? Is science the search for truth these days of the search for ways to hide the embarrassment of not questioning the obvious before? Why are these presenters in this superb series not "mainstream" ?? Fantastic blu-ray series. I am no UFO "nut", I am no "fox mulder" but this series asks elementary questions about our history. We are surrounded by rubble of buildings we could not build today and do not seem the slightest bit bothered. Staggering statement as it leaves my fingers.
