A compelling and detailed account of the savage diseases that afflicted our ancestors. Dr Symes' scholarship and eye for telling detail bring refreshingly candid insights into the lives of ordinary people in the recent past. This unsanitised view of our insanitary history is not for the faint - hearted but is a must for those interested in real life as it was lived and left.

This was a beautifully written, easy to read, piece of work. Ruth Symes is obviously an an expert but she wears her learning lightly: one does not feel as if one had been wading through a sea of impeneratable facts but when one has finished the piece, one knows that one has learnt something of value. She has told me more about this condition than many other authors who seem to write twice as much but give half the information!

I would be very happy to read more by this author.

Quite a good book that describes the symptoms and causes of Scarlet Fever along with relevant dates. A few good illustrations. However this book is extremely short, just a few pages really.
