An invaluable resource for both yoga students and teachers, this comprehensive DVD includes nearly 4 hours of in-depth lectures, demonstrations and special features on human anatomy as it relates to yoga practice. The focus of the DVD is comparative skeletal anatomy: understanding the underlying skeletal structure of the body, how the shapes and sizes of the bones differ from person to person, and how to use that knowledge in gaining a much deeper understanding of our individual yoga practices. Paul Grilley explains the key concepts of compression, tension, proportion and orientation with the help of a wide range of yoga students. These concepts help us to understand why no two people will ever experience the same yoga posture in exactly the same way. Paul's light-hearted yet provocative approach will challenge many misconceptions about yoga while providing the foundation for the development of a truly personal yoga practice grounded in safety and respect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent anatomy review 4 yoga teachers 16 Jan 2011
This DVD is excellent for showing how every physical body is different and that how we should never force our bodies into positions that are not right for them. Four hours of practical explanation of how the anatomy works with demonstrations with actual students and constant reference to the human skeleton. There is an Interactive Skeleton section at the end which is really helpful.

Paul Grilley is a down-to-earth knowledgeable presenter. He demonstrates very clearly and with a sense of humour how two people doing one yoga posture will never quite experience it in the same way as all our bodies are unique. He clearly explains the concepts of 'compression, tension, proportion and orientation'.

Informative viewing for all yoga teachers and serious students alike. Highly recommended.

I was shown clips of this DVD at my yoga teacher training in Kripalu. Upon returning home, I immediately purchased the DVD and I am so pleased I did. It is incredibly helpful to be able to say to students, "Your downward dog is not 'incorrect' because your heel is not on the ground," and then to be able to back that up with the anatomical reasons, explaining how skeletal structures can make postures look very different from person and to person, and how bone-on-bone compression plays a large role. How wonderful, right? To give students the freedom to be themselves in a posture? If everything was uniform, it would be a bit boring!

My husband is relatively new to yoga (not a teacher), and he watched parts of the lectures with me. He also found them very helpful, though I agree with one reviewer that this may not be for all students of yoga. My husband even thought it got a bit boring at times when I was pretty much salivating at all the information! ha!

Overall, a great buy for any yoga teacher or yoga student interested in anatomy.
